Toshiba Netbook screen seizure

Hello to my favorites geeks,

2 days ago, my netbook was working fine. I left it on the table, went to do some stuff came back and my screen was like on the picture. It didn't fall, nor got hit, nothing.

It still under the warranty but I would like to know what it could be. Any ideas of what happened?

Cheers

Nil

Re: Toshiba Netbook screen seizure

Did it ever drop before ? If yes, it could be a faulty connector ( might not be available to be claimed under warranty if it was dropped ).

Alternatively, a software issue, perhaps a video driver update misbehaved.

Re: Toshiba Netbook screen seizure

You mean a software issue as in possibility Nr 2 above ?

It can be fixed, but not normally by Toshiba warranty ( they might be able to but with a hefty bill that will cost more than the Netbook itself ).

Your version of Windows might include a a feature called System Restore that you can attempt by yourself before the screen blanks out.

Find a decent IT guy and he might be able to fix it within an hour or two. Too bad, I am not due to visit Barcelona anytime this month

Re: Toshiba Netbook screen seizure

When we look at it, it does indeed look like something with the screen itself not with a software issue....

My husband just told me I drop it weeks ago (I don't remember) but it was all fine since and never had a problem.

Last week, I got a big virus in it which force me to do a recovery in an earlier point in time.

Maybe it is it?

Re: Toshiba Netbook screen seizure

Looks a bit like some of the apps you can get to fake cracked screen, could someone have sneaked one on whilst you were out of the room.

Assume that if you reboot that the problem is still there? If it's a driver issue then you can try updating the driver by going "device manager" in "Control Panel" finding the graphics adapter and do right-click "update driver"

If you can't work booting normally try booting in safe mode

Re: Toshiba Netbook screen seizure

I strongly suspect the drop is the cause ie a hardware problem caused by the user. There is a connector that might have been dislodged or damaged at the hinge of the screen to the main body. Sell it off ( on EF ) on Ebay as preloved, damaged, as is condition etc. and get a real notebook.

iPad, netbook, notebook etc. all show these signs after being dropped, Nil

Desktop PC is good whilst at home or office, and quite another beast altogether.

No shit einstein!

I know this. I don't want a PC anymore because of all trouble I have since years with them. Viruses, etc. And since I am not working with heavy programs anymore but just use it to read on internet, it was the point of the netbook. I'll have enough with an Ipad!

We also have a desktop PC we use as our home video center connected to our TV.

Well, I was hoping to save my Toshiba.....

Re: Toshiba Netbook screen seizure

Looks like someone threw something at the screen while you weren't looking. Or the glass cracked when you originally dropped it and some temperature change caused stress and fractured it.

Depending on the cost of the netbook you either bin it or replace the screen. Assuming everything else is fine, you can connect an external monitor and use it temporarily to get all your files off.

It doesn't look like a faulty/dislodged connector but as that can be clipped back into place it's worth checking for anyway. Google to get instructions for doing that. Usually involves removing tiny screws to remoe the keyboard after which the monitor connector should be visible.

Toshiba do have engineer/service manuals online so they will show you where all the connectors are.

Re: Toshiba Netbook screen seizure

Could it be, that it noticed its own hideous color (pink) and cracked?

Just saying, it could be.

Re: Toshiba Netbook screen seizure

The screen isn't cracked. It looks like it but it is from inside. Like it is the pixels that cracked (if that can make sense).

Lib, we all know your natural closeness to pink so get out of the closet and assume your pink self entirely.

Well, first of all I'd like to say, that it was your daughter who gave me that pink balloon....and the other thing is, I have the exact same thing happened to my camera. On one of my many, many trips to Paris I leaned on my camera by mistake and the screen seems fine on the exterior..but the picture is pretty me the same as yours.
