Looking for advice -Buying a camcorder

hi all,

I am planning to buy a camcorder, nothing fancy, just something that can be used for home-videos... with a budget between 300 & 400 chufs..

Any suggestions?

Re: Looking for advice -Buying a camcorder

Do you really need one? Phones do really good quality movies now, ideal for home use, and you always have your phone with you.

After that, most point and shoot cameras do a great job, if you have one already, check it's video mode. For 300-400chfs you'll get a decent point and shoot that should do HD.

Consumer video cameras seem almost superfluous these days.

I had same dilemma few months back. I don't have a smartphone (just a blackberry ) and I don't carry around my SLR camera.

I wanted something simple to use, light, portable so I went with a Flip camera. Its truly amazing (for what it is supposed to do). Unfortunately I think they have recently been discontinued but you might be able to order, possible at a discount, if they have excess stock or you can try online on ebay or amazon

Have a look at http://www.theflip.com/en-us/

cheers

I just picked up a bberry and am very impressed with the video (1280x720 720p HD) taking for home videos and little memories.

Re: Looking for advice -Buying a camcorder

I bought a Sony MHS-CM5 for a trip around New Zealand/Australia a few month ago. Lovely bit of kit and excellent video quality, although I mostly had it in 720p 60fps mode as we were filming fast action like Dolphins etc, but it does do 1080p. It was about the only one that I could find that came with a proper 5x optical zoom and although a little noisy zooming (the mic seems to be a bit too close), it did produced excellent long range shots.

The optical zoom is one of the features that a camcorder provides that the smart phones etc don't.
We have an old Sony DV camcorder which works great.

Features that I really like - and use, and which you may wan to think about include:

Tripod mount.
Good low light recording.
Remote control.
Mic input.
Manual/Auto focus.
Manual/Auto exposure (I almost always use spot metering).
Eye-piece viewfinder (allows me to keep the camera still).

Having said that, the real ability that is required is that of being able to edit down the four hours of family recordings into a ten minute snappy film that family may actually want to watch without falling asleep.

I have a brand new flip video for sale. It is white & chrome, 8GB of memory which equates to 120 minutes. All the specs are described here if interested. http://store.theflip.com/en-us/produ...aHD8GB2HR.aspx

Please PM me if interested.
