Depends how much it is, MC, I wouldn't pay for his food if he ordered a load of expensive stuff that I wouldn't order for myself!
Yup.

they guy has a 500 EUR note on the table. what's there to haggle about. "i don't feel like breaking the note". WTF? You should have said "I don't feel like breaking your nose, but I will do if you don't stop acting like a cheap ass"
LOL good one, I doubt I will ever have a date like that again, but I'll keep this line in mind.

If we go out and he then comes up with some elaborate or lame excuses as to why I should not only pay my share but his too, trust me, there'll be no ridiculous attempts at haggling, bargaining or negotiation involved.

No problem. Sure I'll pay for what I've had but as to his share, absolutely no way! No can or will do. That's down to him, regardless of the cost. I'm then outta there and the resultant failed fledgling association. Yeah!
Amen, Sista!

makes me wonder what he was trying to learn about you. you know how lawyers can be.
He was not a lawyer. My neighbour was an attorney, and this guy (my date) was his client. He was an investment banker. I was an investment banker too.

I think if you wait for karma to congratulate you for taking the bill when the guy act like a douche, I feel you may be very disappointed... If karma exist, I think it reward you for doing good actions not for letting someone abuse your good manners.

I think if a man ask a girl out for dinner, it should come with the intention to pay. Now, since you never know what kind of guy you go on a first date with, you are better to bring money and not expect him to pay. When the bill comes, since he invited, he should take it and pay. A little protest from the girl is well seen so it shows she is ready to pay and didn't expect it.

A real gentleman who takes a girl out pays the bill in my book. For many girls and guys I know, if the girl insist to pay it is insulting and won't be taking out again. If the guy wants to share the bill it is view as cheap and won't be going out with him again.

Is it old fashion, I don't know. But I think we all could enjoy a bit more of the old fashion in our life.
Can't be better said.

A few years ago I was dating someone who preferred to pay her half, which annoyed me as I liked eating at restaurants beyond her budget (and for which I would have been happy to pay for both)!

Tom
LOL. You need to stop dating people who have a budget.

Works the other way too ie there are many guys today - young and old - who actually expect and want to pay from the get-go. Thankfully, those are the kinds of gentlemen I have either been invited out by (except Mr Burger King meal as mentioned in an earlier post of mine) or have as good buddies.
I know, and I actually appreciate it myself, to be honest.

It was just the automatic readiness to be taken care of vs readiness to take care of sb. that does not equal in my world, I think it might be cultural. It's not better just different. It might be daft, in fact, in some situations, but voila. Not a big deal, though, if you ask me. Kinda petty in the big picture.

I could care less for a cash prince, or dividing things equally, or whatever, I think I'd care more for ideas..Hmm. Like playing chess with somebody, or reading to one another, or jam, or do whatever else does somehow count for more than being invited to an impressive restaurant.. It's kinda boring, innit.

I did, in fact I married one a couple months ago.

No money, no budget!

If it's boring, it wasn't a good restaurant.

Personally, I like going to good restaurants for the inspiration I get for my home cooking, if they don't cook better than I do, or do things that I already can do, I don't see the point in going.

Kind of like going to a concert.

Tom

I agree with ya. On the cooking part. I can tell the recipe from eating it, so I love eating in a place with decent food, one learns a lot.

The most disappointing are the places with deep fried Coop frozen stuff. Still haven't gotten over it. And as for a date in those, boooo. Not that the food should really matter so much, innit..

Though, the concert, naw, most people play bass better than I do, though I have more fun than most do, hahahahah.

Honestly?

I would. If a- the person is having a blast, b- looks fab, c- if it is an interesting cause. There are too many bands with mediocre or flat our miserable bass players, but some pull it off, since it's a good combo, the rhythmic section is not really suffering so much, and you feel the good band vibe. At the end of the day, it is not really about a particular technique, but a band magic. I played my 1st gig 4 weeks after I picked up the bass, but we had so much fun..the reviews were fab, they did call us some kind of weird Adams family, but who cares.. A giant guitarist and his two little rhythmic section kids. It was hilarious.

And then, finally, there is this support-my-homies feel, solidarity and all. So, I would go to see a mediocre band for a date...not entirely a pretentious one, but somebody trying to pull off a project, yes. I have done it many times, in fact, and most of my friends actually take their dates into some kind of similar artistic mess, too.
