So true.

An ex-GF of mine was Latin American and we went over there to see her folks several times. Her gradma and great-grandma (who was coming up for 100) were the real bosses of the family and even the most macho of the male descendants and in-laws would follow their wishes to the letter. Interestingly they didn't have to say much but just made a few subtle hints and everybody understood what had to be done. But interestingly when dealing with any aspect of the outside world it was the males who pretended to be in command and got loud if necessary and the females shrunk back to almost inivisibility. It was facinating to see how their roles switched in that interaction.

exactly. the only real alpha woman i know is my aunt back at the village, she seen it all, had many kids and grand kids, all the village comes to her for advice and her alpha male husband is like a pussy cat near her

I don't know, but I don't buy the yin and yang principle. Any attempt to put human beings in tidy little drawers freaks me out.

What's attractive anyway? According to some studies, a woman finds men more or less attractive according to their menstrual cycles. It might depend on what movie played last night and how many Cosmopolitans she burnt as a teenager.

Maybe I'm a hopeless romantic, but I would have thought human beings had evolved enough to go beyond the typical "is he strong, broad shouldered, good gene carrier" choice of attractiveness.

I'm very much thankful I don't see in black and white. To me an extremely feminine woman can be as attractive as an extremely masculine one. Ok, since I am actual not that kind of player, an extremely feminine man can be as attractive as an extremely masculine one would be more exact.

And a more masculine woman doesn't mean she's going to be an alpha.

To be honest, I have the feeling I'm just wasting my latin. I feel sometimes really sad and disappointed that human kind still lingers on the necessity to print a label on you, and shift you out to the correct place in the shelf. Maybe Orwell was right after all.
OK, I take back what I wrote about attractiveness and just I'd just admit that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. I believe that we are all a mixture of (archetypally understood) yin and yang principles and attraction is an interplay of these forces, a very mysterious phenomenon, which can never be defined once and for all. Thanks to this mystery every discussion about male and female principles is so fascinating and can never be resolved. Yin and yang forces are not "tiny little drawers" and they are not connected to biological gender or menstrual cycles. They carry distinct energies, though, IMO.
I don't know any more what an "alpha female" is to be honest. Maybe the one who is always true to herself?

Re: Alpha Females

Dozens of posts so far (but it feels like more) with all of us opining on the validity of a self-applied label, or raging against the application of labels.

What a perfect demonstration of deconstruction in action.

Here's a thought. Maybe people who label themselves are revealing something. Maybe people who label others are revealing something. Maybe people who label others on the basis of the way they label themselves are revealing something. Maybe people who choose labels defined in a precise sense and a fixed context by zoologists to label humans with shifting roles in an exact context are being duped?

So, hands up everyone who wishes nobody would have to be labelled, either by themselves or by anyone else.

Hmmmm.

And now, hands up everyone who wishes LiB would walk to work.

To be very honest, I had no idea what one was in the beginning of this thread, and still have none, outside the context of the animal kingdom...

I've seen hints pointing to matriarchy, masculinity in a female, bossiness on a woman, and submission versus oppression.

Still no concrete answer... I think we should probably take LiB's train over and over again till we find the woman and ask her what she meant...

LACONISM:

Etymology

From Latin laconia, from Ancient Greek Λακεδαίμων (Lacedaemon, “the region surrounding the city of Sparta”)

Re: Alpha Females

it requires an initial strength to proclaim ones strength. so she's probably not a lost case. but she is potentially a stupid case.
however the attitude is important. a sentence can have a lot of meanings. any feelings about her motivations when you heard her?

Hmm..hahaha.

Anyways. I thought about the traits that are in all of us, though. Those alpha just follow them for some kind of purpose they are acutely aware of, me thinks. And then there are those and I think OP was talking about that, who want to be so alpha, it's humorous.

There are careers that break you into becoming familiar with your alpha side, though. Any intense frontal work (and I don't mean shooting range fun, heh). Teaching in a specific environment breaks one into an alpha at times no matter what, despite the person being naturally veering towards beta-ness. Finding oneself leading a department, or fronting a band coz homeboys are too shy or wrapped up in their chord progressions to notice our audience..

I also think it is a matter of upbringing, if one is brought up face responsibility it is more likely one will not run away from leading role, since that person does not see it as power or competition, but what it really translates into, responsibility. Despite naturally gravitating towards the beta-ness, the absorber, the quiet observer.

either that, or an utter lack of social skills.

Bravery and stupidity are sometimes hard to tell apart.

Cue the elderly manager who tells stories about how he somehow invented the Internet and/or email, believing his own tosh and totally unaware that it's been a running joke for years. I've worked for people like that.
