What'sapp or Viber?

Seems my kids use Viber more and my friends use what'sapp more. Viber is free to iphone users while what'sapp costs a franc.

I've downloaded both but am wondering if one is better than the other.

Re: What'sapp or Viber?

I guess it will come down to what more of your friends use. I have both, but most of my friends use WhatsApp, and besides, I never experienced good voice quality with Viber, so that additional feature is frankly moot for me.

Re: What'sapp or Viber?

never even heard of viber until you mentioned it. whatsapp has a clear subscription model (at least on android). i'm curious as to how viber will monetise since the app is free and they have no ads.

I recently made several Viber calls from holiday in turkey with dodgy wifi connection to my mum in the UK and sound quality was as good as a normal phone call

Re: What'sapp or Viber?

Viber...!!
It offers more then what whatsapp offers, just that Viber is network-bandwidth hungry. If you have hispeed Wifi, then it is just awesome.

Re: What'sapp or Viber?

Viber is solid as long as you've got a good network connection or wifi, particularly for the other party outside of Suisse

Re: What'sapp or Viber?

They're not the same kind of deal. What'sApp is a free texting service over the internet, Viber is for voice calls over IP. For iPhone users, the new iOS 5 will have it's own free messaging service, that's up for downloading later this week.

I find Viber to be pretty useless, the first time it rings you'll think you're in the USA as the ring tones are different. If it worked as well as Skype then it would be in constant use, but it doesn't.

Whatsapp works for Blackberry, windows mobile, Android and iOS.

Viber is only Android and iPhone.

Re: What'sapp or Viber?

I use viber mainly for texting, iphone to iphone and it works great, you can see if texts have been read or not. Call quality is not great unless both parties have wifi (in my experience) but hey it's free :-))

This is a mixed blessing. Sometimes you just don't want to be bothered by anyone and use the "didn't see your message until morning" excuse. No longer possible.

Anyway, I use both WhatsApp and Viber. They've rendered SMSs all but obsolete, I'm already considering cancelling my unlimited SMS option. Calls are already at a minimum. 3G and 4G is all we'll need soon.

your good old excuse is still very much useable.

Whatsapp simply tells you when a message has been 'delivered' to the recipient's device, not when it has been read. Which is exactly how it is with SMSs...

You sure? I believe it's one check mark for delivered to Whatsapp, two check marks for read inside the application window.

Viber on iPhone 4s

One for the iPhone guru's.

I was using viber for a year or so on my 3 without issue. I got my new 4s, did the set up and sync etc and everything is fine, except now whenever I turn it off, I lose any conversation history which is a bit annoying. I thought there may be a setting that auto deletes when you shut it down, but can't see one... any clue

I found this which was posted 2 weeks ago on Viber's website:

Q: i'm using IOS 5 and viber 2.1.2..every time i restart iPhone my Chat history is gone..just the same as 2.1.1...how to prevent it from happening

A: This is a known issue to us, and it should be completely fixed on our upcoming version 2.1.3 (hopefully within a week to a week and half).

We apologize for the temporary inconvenience

Re: Viber on iPhone 4s

If anyone else is having this problem here is the workaround until v 2.1.3 launches. Close Viber before you shut down your iPhone by clicking twice on the 'Home Button' > Tap and hold the Viber icon> Once the icon starts jiggling, tap on the red 'x' to close it completely. This will save your message history, when you restart the phone.

BTW - Would this thread not be better in telephone section?

Isn't that just removing it from the list of last opened apps..? (I'm seeing a red minus sign, not an X)

No, the TV/internet/telephone area is meant for Switzerland specific issues (connections etc.), not general cell phone (and apps) or computer questions (which are off topic).
