Train from Manchester airport - Help please

Afternoon all
I know it's not a Swiss related question, but reading through the posts there are quite a few members who fly to Manchester. Have any members out there who travel to Manchester airport ever taken the train from there to continue their journey? Iíve always had a family member pick me up, but will be taking the train home from the airport in a few weeks for the first time. Iíve no idea if itís easier to buy tickets on line, or just as easy to buy them there at the station. If you are someone who takes the train from th'airport, do you get your tickets ahead of time? Are they cheaper online then buying them at the ticket machine on the day?
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Ta muchly

Re: Train from Manchester airport - Help please

Hi

I used to fly to manchester loads when i was studying. If you have used any other train station in the UK you will be fine. I always get my ticket at the airport. I think is the same price and it saves me from having to look for them. Depending where your final destination is, you may need to change at manchester piccaddilly. Its a pretty big station but impossible to get lost. Just a warning though. There is no place to sit on the platforms and is a bit chilly. Note that this may be a bit of old info as i havent been there for 5 years but i never had a problem and it was my first time travelling alone in the UK

Re: Train from Manchester airport - Help please

Hi Gata, thanks. I think the last time I went on a train in the UK was nearly 30 years ago I just never did rail journeys, so it's going to be very new. I don't even know where the station for the train is in the airport I've looked on the website map, and looks like it is near the petrol station......I know where that is.

This may help,

http://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/m...nt/StationMaps

There is a cafe you can keep warm in on the platform.
I usually buy tickets at the station, it's very easy, either at the ticket office or from a machine.

Thanks, hannah'sauntie. Was a bit worried in case we had to wait in the cold. Cheers for info. I'm starting to feel a bit easier about it now.

the train connection is always bad for me so i end up having to wait about 40 mins for the train. plenty of time to buy the ticket on the day.

How far do you have to travel? It might be worth getting a taxi.

Buying the tickets online will be cheaper than buying them on the day at the station. They frequently have special offers

You are correct, but maybe it can also depend how far you are going. And a lot of the cheaper offers mean you are committed to a specific train and time. Which isn't always possible(delayed flight etc)

Going to Sandgrounder Town!! By taxi it's about £30 - £40. Looking at on-line train fares, it will be £16.80 for an adult and one child. So not a bad price.

Re: Train from Manchester airport - Help please

Thanks for the replies folks. Gata, looks like they still get posted to a UK address, so might get my sister to post them off to me. The £16.80 or so price is an online price, and is for an any time ticket. I can't see a price for how much ticket would be from the counter on the day, so don't know how much difference there is in price.

Assuming you pay by credit card just put the card into the ticket machine and it will spit the tickets out. Remember that in the UK you get one ticket for each direction not just one like here.

BY the way The Trainline sticks on a surchage I think, try one of the train companies.

I sometimes go to Newcastle from Manchester and I just book on www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk .
