I don't wish to turn this into another Israel/Palestine thread, but why should they be any different to countries that do not recognise a Palestinian State?
Your statement is in principle right, there should be no difference in a logical flow of thoughts between the two cases.
Following this logic, one could also say, "Well, you don't wear diamonds, but you have no issue with holding a shotgun and smoking?" and so forth for any kind of issues. Perfectly legitimate questions.
The "problem" is, as I mentioned, that a lot of the stuff we choose to fight for has a "sentimental" origin and does not follow logic at all, or seldom.
In the specific example you cited, my "fight" derives from positive personal experiences in the country and with its inhabitants over the course of 20 years. It is entirely possible that my perception would be totally different had I had very different related personal experiences. Purely emotional. We always find our Nemesis though: for example, my OH, for completely emotional reasons related to his personal experiences, refuses to travel to Israel, so there you go.

My only fight:

Getting my husband to pick up after him and actually CLOSE THE FREAKINF DRAWERS AND CUPBOARD DOORS

I don't follow your "logic" here - the statement you replied to involves two controversial countries of controversial geographical boundary which are engaged in a sectarian conflict against each other. Hence there are many identical features of the comparators.

Your "logic" then suggests an identical logical question would be involving comparators :
  • a decorative stone
  • a deadly weapon
  • an activity leading to reduction in health in the person doing said activity and those surrounding that person(s)
My "logic" would indicate to me that this is a very poor analogy indeed. Please fill in the missing gap(s).

Re: What are your fights?

I try and fight and resist every time someone says things about a group, judging them as a whole. Sometimes we have overwhelmingly negative or positive experiences of a group and we judge accordingly having met a fraction of a percentage of them. For example, I fond the Australians I met worldly and open minded until Duh, someone pointed out that I only met the ones who left!

As I get older I find this more tempting and fight myself not to judge. In ireland this would have been travellers. I met quite a few and none were nice but it doesnt mean they are all horrid:

SO in this way I try and fight 'isms of many sorts but often find myself failing

Re: What are your fights?

I fought for an end to apartheid in South Africa (we won that one), academic freedom in South Africa (won that too), and just government for all people of South Africa (...ah, hellfire and damnation...!)

Then I moved on to voting against the Tories (won that one) in favour of socially concerned government (ah, um, oh - it's hellfire and damnation again...!)

Now I struggle daily to ensure the correct use of the semicolon. THE COMRADES OF THE SEMICOLON STRUGGLE WILL NEVER KNOW DEFEAT.

Also, we need to band together to ensure that Rock, Paper, Scissors is outlawed and completely replaced by Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock. Or the world will end prematurely.

Actually, this march for tolerance
That sounds really scary...

I was never on a march because back in the old country I'd probably be killed on one. It would very easily turn into that one. I do the less militant, more burocratic way, supporting organizations with my vote, and friends with my support.

Let's just say when there was a referedum to allow homosexual marriage, and the yes actually won, I had to confirm with 5 different sources to make sure I wasn't being Rick Rolled...

The biggest challenge is to change the mind of my very catholic mother... I think that one is a lost battle though...

Hope never dies!

I fight lethargy and indifference most of the time, however...

People who get their knickers in a twist over small and insignificant stuff usually get my back up, along with people who big-up their side of an argument using über-emotive words to blot out their lack of knowledge and experience.

Re: What are your fights?

Each human's right to be treated with respect and as an equal. I worked in a women's shelter and facilitated domestic violence groups for men and women for many years, and this is one area where I will always a voice, and no sense of humor. I get pretty bent out of shape by general comments about gender and prefer to come back to our sameness as humans, then the differences people like to highlight.

I will also go to bat over labels. I think when we label someone it is a way to take away their humanness (and right to respect), and push them outside of our circle of compassion.

Lastly, "shoulding" on others. Why should person X be the judge of person Y? We each have a life to live. Obviously there are caveats and this is a bigger conversation, but I can't stand judging others (which means sometimes I can't stand myself - but at least I'm working on it.)
