Did you become what you dreamed of?

What was your dream as a child? What did you want to become?

What did you end up doing? What did you become?

Re: Did you become what you dreamed of?

No, I did all the things I really did not want to be- and it was wonderful, no regrets.

Re: Did you become what you dreamed of?

No - I found out I wanted to do other things. Probably, if I had a less academic family, I would have chosen differently. But, does it matter, really? As long as you are happy...

Re: Did you become what you dreamed of?

I can't remember what I dreamed of being as a child (I mainly just wanted to not be a child and now I'm an adult I want to be a child again) but since then many times I've dreamed of doing something and then just done it...

My last dream from the summer was to get a ski job, and I've just started a 4 month ski holiday (which I'm getting paid for it)

Re: Did you become what you dreamed of?

Well, as a child I dreamed of being a ballerina - but ran into a little hurdle called complete and total lack of talent. Not to mention I'm not exactly built along classic ballet lines. Even back then me in a tutu was... unthinkable.

As a fresh graduate I dreamed of being able to pay my rent, so I took an odd night shift job to tide me over until I could put my vast knowledge of 14th century agrarian reform to use...

Turned out I loved the odd job, and somehow it morphed into a career. I mean, they actually paid me to be nosey, to bother honest folks with inane questions, to figure out why people do what they do, why they buy what they buy. Not quite up there on the level of discovering a cure for cancer, granted - but a heck of a fun way to pass the time and pay the rent.

But then, two roads diverged in a yellow wood... and I took the 'trailing spouse' one, and left the career behind. And that has made all the difference.

Re: Did you become what you dreamed of?

I proudly announced to my mum that I was going to be an architect as it would be fun to dig up old bones

Then I wanted to be a pharmacist until I discovered how much maths was involved.

Now, I do my job, go home, get paid. Not the most fullfilling career but one that is flexible enough that I can spend time with my daughter.

Well, I wanted to be an architect because I was told there are no more old bones to dig up.

Then I grew up and have to deal with old bones my boss throws at me.

Life is full of wonders...

I dreamt of becoming the definition of an English person.
I succeeded.

Unfortunately, there aren't many steam locos around these days.

I didn't make it flying fast jets either ..... although I did ultimately get my pilots licence - just for the hell of it.

O didn't make it to be a doctor (doesn't every child want to become a doctor at some point?), nor a medium distance athlete. So no, I did not become what I have dreamed of.

Re: Did you become what you dreamed of?

Wanted to be a pilot, but was not privileged enough to afford the scholarships to be a commercial pilot the easier route.

Attended air cadets with a view to joining the RAF, got to fly a few times, but soon learned a military lifestyle would not suit me.

In the bin went flying dreams.

Left grammar school at 16, tired of being dictated to by idiots and hating the schooling system.

Got a job. Hated it

Got another job, hated it

Got a job at no.1 accountancy firm at 18, liked it.

6 years later I am offered to work in this country I assumed was very cold, had lots of cows, and lots of cheese. I soon learned this country actually had seasons as opposed to overcast grey and a two week summer. I learnt that I could ski, and enjoy it very much.

I learned I have made more money than most people my age and live a very privileged lifestyle, with many years ahead to make it better.

I had a dream, but reality worked out better.

Re: Did you become what you dreamed of?

When I was growing up I was fascinated by electronics, took apart old TVs, bugged my sister's slumber parties, etc. I wanted to study electronics and become an engineer.

Did that.

Later in life I became addicted to travel, visited Europe and Asia several times and always dreamed of moving to Europe.

Did that.

Wanted to just put the world on hold, throw on a backpack and travel around the world for half a year.

Did that.

Wanted to started a family, have a boy and a girl.

Did that.

Wanted to buy a nice house in the countryside where my kids could grow up in.

Did that.

Wanted a lower stress job where I could focus on what I do best and not have to manage anyone or live out of a suitcase or sit in meetings most of the time.

Did that.

My problem .....now what?

Just noticed I am approaching post number 1000. Maybe that is my ultimate goal in life.

Likewise melon collie....trailing spouse route currently. Any tips on making one self useful?

Studying German currently and as you know have an interest in dog training but but always seem to cringe when someone asks me what I do for a living.....

Ok, I am really really kiddin', heheheh...

I wanted to be Vinnetou and help everyone. So, I guess I have become what I dreamt of, the props are different.

Playing muzzak, too, so I guess past dreams have been inspirational. I think we have dreams as kids that inspire us, but the manifestation in the actual career can be a lot different, albeit on the same principle.
