Okay, so I know that Schiphol is open 24/7 and that sleeping in the airport is permitted and even lauded as one of the best.

The general consensus is that sleeping landside (i.e. pre-security check) is horrible whereas sleeping airside (i.e. post-security check) is heavenly.

My question is: is it possible to get to the airside part of the airport during all hours of the night? We have a 15-hour overnight layover and so we intend to see the city, have some drinks and return to the airport around 3 or 4am, just enough time to (hopefully) get a few hours of shut eye before our 10am departure.

I know this isn't necessarily Switzerland-related and I DID post a similar thread on the seemingly more appropriate flyertalk.com this morning, but let's be honest, the EF community is simply top-notch!

I only have experience sleeping in Geneva and Barcelona airports. I arrived at both airports around 10pm and EVERTHING in Geneva was closed - awful. Security was open in Barcelona, plus a couple of 24 hour bars, plus lovely soft benches for sleeping. In short - would never sleep in Geneva airport again if I could help it, Barcelona I would.

I imagine there are flights departing at 6am-ish, aren't there? If so, the security check would have to open around 4:30 or so, maybe even earlier.

Yeah I imagine, based on what I've read, that it will be fine. I'd just like to get that confirmation from someone to put my mind at ease...

No flights are leaving schiphol between 00:00 and 06:00 but I couldn't find "opening hours" for the security check on the website. But it's true once you past the security check you can find a comfy place for a nap - I did once because of a delayed flight.

What time is your layover? as Zymogen said, the airport is closed from 10pm till 7am in the morning. Nothing is opened.

Transportation into and out of Schiphol after midnight is by the hour - if you plan to get back to the airport after visiting the city. This is the Nederlands equivalent of our SBB.ch:

However, as with my many experiences with the Dutch transportation system, these train times are generally a guideline. We've been too spoiled by the SBB

Had a friend who tried it after a night in the RLD before a flight back to the US, he gave it good reviews.

I've also heard good things about Yotel, and that you can pay by the hour, but we're trying not to spend any money.

Since this hotel is past security and thus "airside", does that imply that you can get past security at any hour of the night?

I'm guessing yes...but I really can't say for sure as I haven't done it myself.

My last experience flying through Schiphol there was not an extra security check before boarding the plane, right at the gate. However, there was a security check at the gate the last time I flew to the US...including an interview. This was shortly after the "pantie-bomber" incident. I don't know if they've relaxed it yet.
