FB breaking and entering

I have never liked Facebook and I got it quite recently and reluctanctly. Right after I installed the Android Facebook app I got a message that someone had logged into my account from Taiwan and it was temporarily blocked. I unblocked it today, uninstalled the app and I must say I feel violated. I am not a computer whizzkid. Should I worry about anything? Can they plant a virus in my phone or steal my passwords? I don't access the bank account from my phone.

Re: FB breaking and entering

If you've never liked Facebook anyway, why not just delete your account? Unless you have to have one for some reason...

My password was strong, a combination of letters and numbers. I have already changed it but I am wondering how he/she got hold of it in the first place.

Re: FB breaking and entering

Does you Android phone happen to be a HTC one? You know, they are from Taiwan...

Simple answer: Whenever you log in from a different computer (and your phone is a computer) does FB do the same show. When you use some internet cafe, you will have to answer your security questions of identify some of your friends on photos...and when you come back to your "normal" computer do you get some sort of message "somebody in x has logged into your account, was that right?". So it is actually a safety feature to make you aware if your account is used from another computer, nothing more and actually a good thing to have.

I believe there was nobody from Taiwan, you simply used your phone, that's it. Still change your password to be sure.

I'm pretty sure the IP address isn't based on the HQ of the manufacturer of the phone you used...

It's Samsung Galaxy s2, but it's a weird coincidence that I had accessed FB for the first time from my phone prior to this, so I hope Treverus is right.

I think Treverus is right Sagitta. To be honest, what's the worst thing that could happen if someone did access your account anyway? Change your status setting to something embarrassing?

One rule for Facebook, simply don't put anything on there that you're not 100% happy for the world to see, even if your security levels are set for friends and known acquaintances. Telling the world that you're going on a 6 week cruise can also alert folk to your house being unattended, just think logically and you'll be fine.

1. secure browsing.

2. notifications for logins from new devices

3. one time password.
this is tedious.
  • First you have to request a one-time password by sending a text message with the message “otp” to 32665(first you need to set up your mobile phone in your Facebook account through “Account > Account Settings” located at the top right corner )
  • Next, Facebook will send you a reply like this :
  • Your Facebook One-time password is THE_PASSWORD (valid for 20 min)
  • Finally you can use this password and login to your Facebook account instead of your main password

Re: FB breaking and entering

A friend of mine was complaining on FB that someone was connected to is FB account. He was going on & on about how "FB is doing nothing about this" "some random persons is connected to my account", etc, etc. Finally he posted the IP address with a comment like "I will get you. Get off my account, etc".

When I looked up the address it was tracked back to his home address!!! lol
