Using sexuality for professional advancement

Was discussing this today and thought i'd get the EF view.

Two questions

1. Is using your sexuality in any form for professional gain ok for you morally? How far is ok and where is the line?

2. Does it only work for ladies to use sexuality in business or can guys make it work too?

My own view

1. Gentle flirting, dressing nicely in a client/supplier relationship is more appropriate than in an internal direct reporting line situation. Its more the rules of the game whereas flirting with the boss is a bit

2. I dont think it can work for guys, because i think that women are too smart and don't fall for it so easily

Any experiences or views you'd like to share

Re: Using sexuality for professional advancement

I never made or had offers in that sense.
The only thing I remember is how my previous employer deliberately selected a very beautiful/sexy account manager to deal with the painful customers. It seemed to work.

Re: Using sexuality for professional advancement

I used to work as HR Manager for a telecoms start-up company in London. The MD's policy was to only employ young attractive women, particularly for customer-facing roles. When I pointed out that that was both sexist and ageist, his reply was 'I don't care. That is what oils the wheels of the machinery; it always has been and it always works'. I always interviewed a cross section of candidates but, in the early days at least, the MD wanted to have the final word and the beautiful young girls always got the jobs.

To a point, he was right, in as much as potential investors fell over themselves to come to our offices. Just how far these girls advanced personally, however, is questionable.

I say definitely---use whatever gifts and talents you have at your disposal.
As per ujjwal opinion--I see the total opposite in Switzerland. But notice that generally in Europe of appearance shallowness over practicality.

I am not having any flirt in general from men.... So I don't see how me trying to get something by doing it will be successful.

Re: Using sexuality for professional advancement

When MG's sil first came to Switzerland (Lausanne) he worked for a female boss who made clear advances to him and took him everywhere, sort of showing him off as you would a pet. And I have to confess that I have used my long legs and my big, em, eyes in my favor but never in a professional environment. It's like Venice said, I have certainly more to offer than that.

Can't prevent from bringing this quote of Balzac:
"Men use their legs to walk and women to make their way".

Re: Using sexuality for professional advancement

coincidentally, i was discussing this very subject last week.

i knew of one girl who literally and unashamedly slept her way to the top. she would have got there anyway but decided to get there faster and have some fun on the way (with various married chaps).

another guy didn't sleep around (to my knowledge) shamelessly flirted and sucked up to key people. he made a major boo-boo and was to be summarily sacked, but his connections managed to save him and earned him a gracious exit.

Re: Using sexuality for professional advancement

I am not sure if sexuality would be the right term...It 's very subjective, what we consider hot.

I would use a term charisma.

And yes. Some work requires it more than other. How far we let it go depends on each, we all have different ethical filter.

Then you can start a thread asking about charisma, Ms Mod

I disagree that they are the same. Charisma is something inbuild and clear - like having blue eyes or nice hair. But sexuality is a tool to be used or not - nothing to do with sexiness

And I disagree! Charisma has nothing to do with eyes or hair; it has more to do with the general aura of a person.

Also, every single person has sexuality, even those who don't consider themselves as, or are perceived as, being sexy.

I think what this boils down to, at the end of the day, is whether or not a person is willing to avail themselves of sexual favours in order to advance their career. And, when someone is so inclined, more often than not there will be a willing recipient.

Re: Using sexuality for professional advancement

i know what you mean mc- it's more like charming. i'm not sure women (or men) are flirting exactly because that implies some kind of a possibility. charming is more like it to me, but i know a lot of men (and women) who enjoy being charmed. it's not really a matter of not having the skills to back it up but more about how people relate to others, which would be a part of their personality...

I don't think a boss would be as tempted to shag a charisma, though.
