VISA to Russia - Insurance ( Portuguese citizen )

I´m going to Russia in February on holidays and in the website I found out that i need an insurance to get the VISA.

The normal insurance we have in Switzerland is enough or we need an extra insurance? If so, can someone please help me find one cheap?

PS: I have portuguese nationality.

Thanks!

Re: VISA to Russia - Insurance ( Portuguese citizen )

This might shed some light:

http://www.russianvisa.org/insurance.html

Quote:
Medical insurance is a supplementary requirement which is valid only for the citizens of certain foreign sates. Officially this requirement is based on the principle of reciprocity - medical insurance is required at those states that made it a mandatory requirement for Russian citizens entering their territory to have a medical insurance policy.

This requirement has become even more ambiguous after Decree 241 was published, which excluded medical insurance from the list of the documents required at the Russian Consulates/Embassies abroad.

However, this centralized regulations has not yet taken effect in all Russian consulates. To find out if you will need a medical insurance, please contact your nearest Russian Consulate/Embassy and clarify this point.

Re: VISA to Russia - Insurance ( Portuguese citizen )

Visas to enter Russia sometimes defy logic. As Jrspet said.... the best way to find out is giving them a call and ask, or just send your paperwork and wait for them to ask what is missing.

Note - If you don't have all the papers on your way in and out, you will be in a hell of a problem. Don't forget you permit - you might need it to explain why your return flight ends in Zurich.

It is also slightly different ( perhaps easier ) if one is sailing to St. Peterburg, RU or going to the oblast of Kaliningrad ( Konigsberg ), RU which has a 4D3N special visa for Schengen Zone residents.

Re: VISA to Russia - Insurance ( Portuguese citizen )

No, as of 2006 you do not need any additional medical insurance to enter Russia - provided your current one covers not less than $15k at the even of accident, illness, injury etc. They don't check it at the border and consulate cannot deny you a visa based on the absence of insurance.

Re: VISA to Russia - Insurance ( Portuguese citizen )

One piece of advice from someone who spent many many hours in the Russian Embassy breadline: go to the embassy early! and don't go on the last day possible for getting the visa, give yourself a buffer in case they ask for more crap!
