TV chef arrested for shop lifting

Shocking.. I always had him down as a Waitrose man (apologies to all our non British members who haven't a clue WTF I'm talking about or WTH he is)

Anthony Worrall Thompson 'arrested for shoplifting cheese and wine'

TV chef Anthony Worrall Thompson has been cautioned by police after he was caught shoplifting cheese and wine from Tesco.
The Ready Steady Cook star was arrested at the supermarket in Henley on Thames after reportedly failing to pay for items at the self-service checkouts five times in 16 days.
Some goods were scanned and paid for while others, including cheese from the deli and bottles of wine, were bagged without being put through the till.

Suspicious staff are believed to have set up a hidden camera in the self-checkout area to catch the 60-year-old and ensure he had not simply forgotten to pay.
The presenter, nicknamed Wozza, was stopped by security guards as he tried to leave the shop on Friday and police were called.
He was arrested on suspicion of theft and taken to a local police station.
A police spokesman said: “Thames Valley Police arrested a 60-year-old man from High Wycombe following a report of shoplifting offences in Tesco, Reading Road, Henley-on-Thames.
“The man has been issued with a formal caution for these offences.”
A person must admit an offence before they can be given a caution.
The shoplifting incidents are believed to have taken place between December 22 and January 6.
The recession-hit chef was forced to close four of his six restaurants in 2009 and make 60 staff redundant after his holding company, AWT Restaurants, went into administration.

After living in Switzerland, stealing wine and cheese in Britain, let alone a Tesco, baffles me.

Unfortunately in a world were Katie Price's new breast implants and the contestants of big brother make prime time 6 o'clock news, this is up there with Cuban missile crisis in terms of international politics.

Nah, Waitrose is where Heston and Delia do their shopping.

It's the discovery that he shops at Tesco (well, used to), that has ruined what little credibility he had rather than the shop-lifting (which is probably a cry for help).

Re: TV chef arrested for shop lifting

This was also his local Tescos, so he knows most of the staff.
He had a sort of breakdown a few years ago over money problems and had to sell his huge house in Henley and downsize to a smaller place in High Wycombe.

I feel quite sorry for him really, but a caution for five offences in a couple of months is a joke. If he'd been charged then at least the magistrates could have sent him for counselling or something similar. As it is, he's just being ridiculed and left to flounder.

I am surprised that he has only got a caution - I am sure if most people went 5 times to Tescos to shop lift they would have been prosecuted

Oh, his fate is more than just a caution, public shame will hopefully exact the correct price and ensure the right outcome. I do not see how prison or a fine will resolve anything. There is a certain satisfaction to public figures dying on a public sword. I hope his problem gets sorted.

Maybe when they took into consideration the quality level of the wine it was no longer considered a crime

Is shocking to know him done such thing. But I am not shicked at people steal items at self scanned check out as I witnessed a number of time at Asda and tesco in the UK.

The latest is that he has admitted that he has a problem, is very apologetic and embarrassed and promises to seek help.
