Re: Ask a Scientist

You know how oranges sometimes have a partial internal second orange in the bloom end? Not a complete orange, but sort of a partial orange without the skin.

Why does that happen?

I've never seen it on lemons, nor on grapefruits.

You must be referring to navel oranges.

Ahaaaaaaa.

Thanks. I never noticed that they are also always seedless.

So, now that I've got your attention...

Do all seedless oranges do this?

Next question: how do plants "know" that it is Spring, and that it is time to germinate/bud etc? It's not simply a case of noticing the temperature warming up, as plants such as snowdrops appear even when there is a layer of snow...
Like Jag said, reduced/increased sunlight exposure makes a plant go dormant then awake as the exposure increases; some plants must experience cold before they can flower; some have various water requirements which will influence their germination.

You can also go the plant cell physiology route, and read up on the proteins responsible for this stage of plant development.

Do all seedless oranges have baby oranges inside? I don't think so. I've never seen a clementine with a baby clementine inside, for example.

Re: Ask a Scientist

Peppers (Paprika) have them too! And they also have seeds.

Wiki says it's a fruit, then claims it's actually a berry (didn't read all of it).

But now the seedless-part in the theory ceases to be valid?

Why is my username always first in the active users list on forums and why aren't the lists in alphabetical order?

The first I'm not sure of - maybe so you know you're here?

The users are listed by entrance ..... last entered, last on the list.

It shows my username first when I look at it, so I would say it always shows the current username first, and the rest are probably in order of login time

That sort of contradicts me being first on the list though doesn't it? And looking at another forum using the same version of vbulletin I can see someone who's been online for several hours who's been down the list, up the list and now down the list again even though they've never been offline during that time.

No it doesn't. You're always first. On my screen I'm always first.
And people log on .... off .... on for several reasons (boss coming in , going out, what ever. So yes, they jump on the list.

Some - like me - log on and just stay logged on all day whether they're actually on the computer or even home or not. When I slam my laptop close and leave the house I stay on-line in EF (I know because I still am logged-in when I return).

Nope, I was on since morning. And kriss kross is last on my list.

Okay, I shall review my theory

edit: Ahhh! Still, I should probably be somehwere next to you according to my theory. So who's last on your list? Jag? Not kriss kross?

34 active members not including me. You're last on the list, kriss kross is before you, FMF before kk. JagWaugh was 13th, but has now dropped down to 28th.

Jag and kriss kross not on my list at all anymore. LOL.
I have no idea. (Yes, as things like this tickle me, I shall try to find out ...... but not tonight as I'm still pondering RobBob's post on my internet-thread. And that is closer to home - my home. LOL).

You might find the answer before me - let me know.
