Nonsense, I ceased being an American three years ago!

Tom
Nonetheless, didn't you cringe when you read the previous post?
I feel a little unclean just by association.

And another thing,...
I love how people say "god bless America" not understanding what what phrase actually means. They say it like it's a given birthright, not like it's supposed to be meant, as a prayer and a plea to a deity for further assistance. Cause if there is a god the the US of A needs that entities help. Of course these days it seems like the rest of the world could use the help as well.

So, the UK is different to Germany which is different to France which is different to Switzerland which is different to Greece which is different to Malta which is different to Sweden which is different to Austria which is similar to Switzerland... So how is Switzerland not in Europe again?

Not in the dreaded Schicksalsgemeinschaft (not really an English word for that, is there?) known as the European Union for starters... And that is actually the MAIN thing, really.

Re: When the Swiss have the audacity to bash America

For someone who has a history of fighting against ALL types of stereotyping in their posts, I am quite surprised by your remarks about "most Americans..."

Do you think that, by virtue of being American, that most of us somehow lose the curiousity that you have of knowing about foreign places? Sorry if you have met some Americans like this, but after visiting more than 60 countries I can tell you that ignorance can (and does) exist anywhere.

Wrooong. In other news, at school we spent two months on the United States (America being an imprecise term) and I can name all 50 states (I don't get confused at the number) plus their 'capital' and a few additional cities, the most important mountains, rivers and lakes, the national parks, indigenous species, what sort of climate is to be expected where, what industries are important to those regions, important dates in US history, most of the presidents and important export goods. We spent additional time on LA and NY, learning the streets and how the cities evolved. We also had a quick look at the political system and some important US inventions. I have never set foot in the US, but have been to Canada and Bermuda. I know all those things about those places too because I am interested in the world at large and am aware that we are just one country of many. When I go somewhere I don't know much about (we only had two hours of geography and two of history per week at school) I read up on all the stuff above because I like to know about the place I'm in.

What do you know about Switzerland? Most Americans (even many of the expat ones) know NOTHING about the outside world, they seem to not care one bit. That comes across as arrogant, hence the bashing.

Fair enough, how about many? I was a bit over-emotional, that's true.

I know, but even with my hyperbolic insertion of off-topic-ness, there's a point where the yankee bashing kinda jumps the shark...

Oh, yeah, I should put my glasses on more often. I always thought you were German. Sorry, I'll just go find my bottle of wine now... (but, honestly, the state of geography education in the states is rather pitiful judging by the PISA and NatGeo reports. So, even if my assumption had been correct, you wouldn't have been wrong, just pushing an already absurd thread a bit too far).

And that's why this thread needs an injection of humor. It's amazing that the fun threads get shut down in a matter of hours and these threads full of nationalism, stereotyping, outrageous generalizations, etc. etc. etc. get left open.

Ah well. I'm with you. Going to open the wine.

"Many" is probably the term we deserve... I wish it were "some." Alas, the state of education in the US is, dare I say, all over the map! ;-)

Defeating the Nazis ? Ending the 2nd world war? Ending the cold war ? Ending the Kosovo war ? Defeating the terrorists in Afghanistan ?

What crisis in the last, say 112 years, have Europeans been able to solve by themselves withouth American help ? And without American sons and daughters dying in foreign countries ?

And they're still taking the bullshit from us without complaining.
Defeated the Nazis - managed that all by themselves? Again?
WWII - last in, last out. US contribution to the effort is better measured by their manufacturing (which we paid for - it wasn't given freely), than actual men contributed. Germans were already in retreat/stalemate before US turned up.
Cold war? That they probably started?
Kosovo? They did what exactly? Wasn't this a UN 'victory'?
Afghanistan? They started this one as well?
Vietnam? They started this one too?
Iraq? This was a multi-national effort in the true sense, so hardly a "US saves the day" example. In fact, the US did have more blue-on-blue than the rest of the nations combined, so hardly a shining example of the US saving the day
Pakistan cold war (2009-)? Another war they've started all by themselves.
Suez? Nope.
Libya (2011). Another UN affair.

etc etc...

Oh wait, I forgot - meant to be humourous now. doh.
