Claiming a UK rental deposit

I went to London during Xmas and New Year. Found a temporarily flat for 10 days on gumtree. The owner wanted to have 400 pounds deposit, the amount was paid via bank transfer.

The deposit was suppose to paid back after 7 days of departure the latest, now after 7 weeks, I'm still waiting for my deposit. I have the landlord's full address and tel number, but every effort to establish the contact failed.

Is there any website you recommend where I can file my complain?

Re: UK deposit

Here is the guide of how to claim the money back here.

In short you will need to have evidence of registered letters sent to the landlord, with official waiting periods in between. With a threat of a small claims filing.

Once it's with the small claims court it will take a few months to process and wait for a reply from him.

If you have a ruling in your favour, you can then attempt to recover the money with bailifs etc.

As long as he has assets and is not bankrupt you should be able to get your money back.

easy you need to send a registered letter which MUST have the heading Notice Before Action.

clearly set out the facts that you have paid a depost for x flat ( give address) between x dates and paid to account x . the promised period for refund has passed and you have not had any reply despite x number of attempts to contact him.

give them 7 days to refund the deposit to your account from reciept otherwise you will start small claims court procedings to recover the money.

Keep it short and sweet - no waffle or emotions.

use moneyclaimonline for this fairly simple case

Re: Claiming a UK rental deposit

In my experience just the threat of going through the small claims court is enough to get payment back.
