Terrifying Earth-sized Plasma Tornado Raged Across Sun Surface

The sun is currently in an active period of its 11-year weather cycle. The current cycle is known as Solar Cycle 24 and will peak in 2013.

Let's only hope that solar storm of 1859 will not happen nowadays because then it will be a really bad day...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_storm_of_1859

It already happened in Quebec however the storm was much weaker. The power failure lasted 9 hours.

Great images, Mibami. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have a feeling that the loops in the 2nd & 3rd are there all the time (too lazy to Google) & the last two are nice Photoshop pastiches. Fourth one looks like orange beer foam...

Correct, exactly as you say... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_flare

From Wikipedia: "The frequency of occurrence of solar flares varies, from several per day when the Sun is particularly "active" to less than one every week when the Sun is "quiet", following the 11-year cycle (the solar cycle). Large flares are less frequent than smaller ones."

And much more about solar storms... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_storm

The 4h image is a a colorized photo of a sunspot taken in May 2010, with Earth shown to scale. This image was taken from the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44193066.../#.T0U5L1GiiDE

The 5th image I just found somewhere but it is definitely a Photoshop.

I just wanted to emphasize on this thread that although people are worried about their permits, insurances, apartments, partners, jobs and discuss important topics like world hunger, wars, global warming and many other issues, not many of them realize the danger that might come directly from our star - The Sun. What happens if a really massive solar storm hits the Earth nowadays? It would disrupt communications, electronic devices and possibly power grids all over the world. And then what??? No electricity for how long??? The repairs will take months or more...
