Do you believe in Extra-Terrestrial life?

Aliens. Most deny they exist but we have countless shows and movies with them in.

Is there life somewhere else in the universe bar our planet?

Re: Do you believe in Extra-Terrestrial life?

Assuming that our planet is just a speck of dust in a huge cosmos with a long life, then either:
1. We're a complete and utter aberration
Or:
2. Life has happened elsewhere
There is no in between.

If big G put us here, then did he realise what a bollix he'd made and didn't bother with life on other planets?

Personally, it's arrogant to assume we're the only ones.

Given time and distances, we'd not know if another planet evolved a radio using civilisation 100,000 years ago:
1. If their planet was "only" 500 light years away
2. They nuked themselves to death 50,000 years ago

Of course there is/has been/will be life elsewhere!!!

Re: Do you believe in Extra-Terrestrial life?

I can't remember exactly the last statistical probability I saw answering this question but it was somewhere close to 99.999999% certain. or 1 to 1 billion against it not being true and funnily enough if it is true ie there are other lifeforms out there then the chance of it being only 2 was tending to 0 ie it was certain that if there is more than one then there are very many!!!

Re: Do you believe in Extra-Terrestrial life?

I think there has to be life out there somewhere, I can't believe that life has only formed on planet Earth. Given that there could be millions of planets in the Universe it doesn't take a huge leap of faith for me to think that there could be ET's out there also wondering if they are alone I also don't buy the argument that life has to be carbon based either; what is there to say that life on a planet elsewhere may have evolved from something like silicon?

it's going well so-far; I am waiting for those who can't believe in any aspect of a 9/11 conspiracy in any way to vote

I'm hardly convinced there is a 9/11 conspiracy, yet I'd say there are aliens out there...

Re: Do you believe in Extra-Terrestrial life?

I think there may be quite a lot out towards Schaffhausen - I certainly believe there must be something else out there - are we as good as it gets? (Obviously I am ...)

We had the most amazing storm the other evening - no thunder, just lightning - but it was lightning that rippled through clouds rather than flashed - a bit like the aurora borealis. If it wasn't a storm then they landed here.

I think life is out there, but we will never meet it. Talk of UFOs and all that jazz is silly.

so you believe ET will one day "phone home" but you have absolutely no doubtings of any "official fact" of what happened 5 years ago?

I'm amazed.

Coming soon - the "Did Jesus exist?" series - featuring "Loaves and fishes - must've been a big Barbie"

Re: Do you believe in Extra-Terrestrial life?

the granularity and precision required for life to have formed on earth is so mind boggling that although it's not likely that the same set of circumstances to have occurred elsewhere, the probability that lifeforms elsewhere have evolved has to be high given the sheer volume of matter out there and taking into consideration the number or permutations for the conducive conditions; light, heat, water etc.

take baby J out of the picture, he is an excuse for us not being able to fathom, much like the inverse arrogance that we are 'it'.

As a Dutch astrophysicist once said to me... 'there is more going on between two slices of toast than cheese...'

They're out there, but they ain't here.

Mind you, Lob might entertain that they were responsible for 9/11

Yes and the silliest thing of all is if you kick pluto out then be implication neptune has to go too. But that would make it very silly so best be biased and use the rules for only one planet that we don't like.

Sumarians are also very interesting lot too. They documented planetary movement for thousands of years from generation to generation and then our ancestors built a religion or two based on it you know Judaism, Christianity, Islam etc. All most interesting but what has it got to do with ETI?

Yep, the universe is (pun intended) astronomically huge. Yes, the probability for life (as we know it) is really, really small. But the universe is really, really big. So actually, it's even likely that life very much like us exists out there.

Although, as said elsewhere in the thread, the chances of ever meeting or communicating with it are extremely small if we take what we know about the laws of physics as being correct.

I don't believe in Extra-Terrestrial life, as you ask - but I am fairly sure it must exist.

What is a universe? Is that a bunch of solar systems like ours with their own suns? Or, is it the total of all the galaxies that we know of? If it's the latter, then again, I'm fairly sure that the odds are life is out there. If it's the former, then possibly.

However, until someone invents a machine capable of exceeding the speed of light, we aren't going to be shaking hands (or whatever they have) any time soon...
