a couple of weekends in US - where to go?

I have a 3-week business trip coming up in April. Will be based in Washington DC, but have a couple of weekends that I could spend travelling. As it's just for a weekend, I would prefer no more than 2-3 hours away by either car or plane, but this obviously gives me a lot of options. I am rather thinking about city trips, not so much hiking or similar.

Where should I go?

Philly is one city that is close and a good to see. Best for the weekend - take the Acela train to NYC on a Friday if you can leave the business at about 5-6pm you can be there 8-9pm. If you haven't been to NYC, must see and easy to get there from DC. Easy back on a Sunday too for work on Mon.

don't want to stay in DC? I have been told one could spend at least a week just trying to see the Smithsonian museums...not to mention all the other sights...

But I would say then NYC would be a great choice. And think of all the shopping!

I second Philly and also recommend Bawlmer, Merlin (Baltimore) where Bertha's Mussels, crab cakes and scrapple are delicious local treats. NYC, too, for bagels, the Village and the Milk Bar's crack pie.

Have been to NYC, and I agree drmom that there's a lot to see in DC, but I've been there several times already. Philly sounds like an idea and mussels and crab cakes as well

Any other suggestions? I will have a car and flying is an option as well.

If you want to get some sun, April should be plenty warm in the Bahamas. There should be plenty of direct flights to Nassau and then stay somewhere on Paradise Island. The Atlantis is easy and lots to do there, but many other options and price points.

Oh Bahamas sounds lovely but there are not that many direct flights from nearby airports - of course does not make sense to spend a whole day travelling if I only want to go for a weekend. I will certainly consider Miami though, lot more options to get there.

I can recommend Nashville or Memphis, loads of things to see and good places to eat.

Re: a couple of weekends in US - where to go?

I second Philly. You could spend a decent day in Center City, and it's not too far to drive.

If it's warm enough, Cape May in NJ is wonderful. Well, springtime on the east coast is just wonderful in general. The whole Jersey shore is a great place if it's warm, but I just love Cape May. Oh, Atlantic City is also close-ish to Philly, if you're into that kind of thing.

Delaware also has nice beaches (Rehoboth, etc.) but I've never been.

By air, go to Boston. Great city, one of the best on the east coast. Feels a bit more European, too.

Re: a couple of weekends in US - where to go?

Haven't been but Virginia Beach, and south along the coast from there.

Savannah, Hilton Head Island and Charleston might be to your liking.

No idea if you would like baseball and sun and it would only be March 31/April 1 in the Tampa, Florida area. Probably can get a direct flight. South of there Sarasota, beautiful beaches, etc.

City thing, Philly maybe Baltimore for the aquarium.

I also second this. Tennessee is a wonderful state and a great place to visit in general. Great music and the best bbq I have ever tasted, and I say this as someone who is part Texan.

I would second the suggestions of Savannah, Charleston and Hilton Head. Specially Savannah & Charleston. They should be a nice temp (and not too buggy!), have lovely architecture and tons of good 'american' history with plantations, the civil war, etc.

Re: a couple of weekends in US - where to go?

Philly seems to get a lot of votes and I have not been there, so that will probably be on the list.

Have been to Savannah. Not into baseball, but thank you for the recommendations anyway.

What would I have to be into to go to Atlantic City?

What makes Cape May so wonderful?

Me, naw. I gave up any claim on Texas when I moved away from the southwest. I do have family with plenty o' Texas pride though...

Atlantic City is a city with a bunch of casinos and a boardwalk. If you want to blow a bunch of cash in a semi-crappy city, then go for it. Hmmm, not a ringing endorsement. So if you wanna gamble, just hop a flight to Vegas.

I've spent some nice times down at Cape May, with it's town center, charming Victorian houses, old lighthouse, etc. It's a popular Jersey shore destination, so it has the usual beaches and boardwalks, minus the typical negatives of the Jersey shore (drunken a-holes from NY). Plus, it's one of the few places on the mid-Atlantic where you can watch the sun set on the beach, thanks to Delaware Bay. The drawback is it's really inconvenient to get to, although maybe you could hop a ferry from Delaware.

It could be too cold for swimming, but if there's a warm spell, it could be a nice time to just laze on the beach.

Re: a couple of weekends in US - where to go?

I assumed with so many airports in the DC area, that there would be more direct flights to Nassau. Too bad!

But Florida also has great beaches/water. I know that I would want to head for some blue water after a Winter in CH.

Good luck!

DC has actually a lot to offer too. The Pentagon, white house, Ben's Chili Bowl, Old Town Alexandria, the freemason thingy....

Re: a couple of weekends in US - where to go?

Philly is full of history with the Liberty Bell and Independance Hall, Ben Franklin etc, and you can try some Philly cheese steak. Also has a nice art museum.

Colonial Williamsburg VA has a colonial village replica and is about 2.5 hours by car from DC. Its kind of like a mini Ballenberg. You could spend a weekend there if you are interested in colonial USA.

Sure but I go there regularly and have seen quite a bit of DC already. So it might be Philly and then another weekend either in Cape May or some warm beach.
