The fact that someone seems to have salted the earth for Events growth around these parts. I've certainly tried my best to attend Geneva events that 1) existed, 2) seemed like fun, 3) were at practical times. I've also created a fair share and so few people showed up that it's clearly not worth it (although everyone that has shown up has been awesome, shout outs to "gata" and "magic"). Generally it seems that Genevan EFers lead busier lifestyles than elsewhere and/or have better things to do, since I don't hear many people complaining about it either. The problem's on the demand, not supply side.

And if people from the Léman area now come out of the woodwork saying, "I would love for there to be a Geneva event!", to them I can only say we've no one but ourselves to blame.
Absolutely agree. I would love to come to the viaduct but 3 hours trip one way its not very convinient. Even Basel its 2.5 hours away. The Geneva events have been fun though (and the people ive met even better)

Note to people who are shy: Dont be just go. My first EF event was a fish dinner and it was me and 4 people who knew each other (calling Russkov). I had a great time!

Re: What keeps you from attending EF events?

Proximity, what to wear and cost are all the main factors for me.

I was talking about this yesterday to someone I just met - each of us very accustomed to having cars but neither of us having one here. We agreed that proximity plus expense are huge barriers to doing things since when we had cars, it was no big deal to stick a "few" bucks worth of gas in to go hang with a friend even an hour or more away. Here, although overall having a train pass is more cost effective than a car, the infrequency of use makes it seem less worthwhile, previously the car was a "given" expense (needed for work, for shopping, for general day-to-day activities), train pass here not so much.

Re: What keeps you from attending EF events?

Well, I did go to a Geneva 'event'.... the 'met Paul and ask him questions' one. I was there long before anyone else and was on the point of leaving when Music chick turned up with Paul, closely followed by Mud and small friend.
It was nice to finally meet some EFers but I was sadden by the turnout.
Popped by Grumpygrapefruit's cheese stall last summer in Morges as well.

Otherwise, I'm horrendously shy, have no transport and live way out in the countryside so it's not always easy to get to things.
Although I've been a member since 2006 I've also only just discovered the Events drop-down. I know; duh.
I am planning to go to the book-swap with gata next month though.... a small start but at least it is one!

Re: What keeps you from attending EF events?

I think the best strategy for an event, is to tag on to a pre-existing one, if possible (mainly for those outside of the usual event hubs).

Par example, we have another round of Slow Ups happening here and there, throughout the next few months; someone should organise a place and time to meet other EFers, and when anyone turns up, and doesn't like the look of the assembled mob (if any), then they can just back step and anonymously blend back in with masses. No harm done. Everyone still participates in the event, one way or the other, anyway.

Re: What keeps you from attending EF events?

I've never been to any EF event but I've bumped into quite a few people here and there and after chatting for a while realised we were both on EF, and then been introduced to further people later. I'm not against an organised meet up on principle though. It'd just have to be somebody else who organises it.

Can you elaborate since we never learned the outcome of it?

Mostly this. I am hopeless at big group events; much happier up some hill or other with no more than three or four other people.

and yet - you were very brave and came up twice for local, simple fun events. Hope you'll come again for this year's Summer events.

2. I can't stomach the site of LiB eating fried chicken.
What if I would rub it all over myself first and then eat it?

Mostly proximity, the vast majority of events are in Zürich or Basel. I've toyed with the idea of heading up to the Viadukt for Thursday night drinks, but never got round to it.

Re: What keeps you from attending EF events?

Kids.
(And no babysitter.)

Sometimes I think it'd be fun to meet some EF peeps, but then I go out so rarely that I tend to use those occasions to go out with people who I already know - like my husband, or my best friend, each of whom I probably go out with about once a year.

Don't do it. The last time I went and introduced myself as my forum name to someone, they took two steps back in shock. I have yet to regain any self-esteem I once had.
