It makes me sick...

Learning 11 languages is not pointless, just a bit sickening! Fantastic, though. What do you think, EFers? How many languages could you take on?

The clip doesn't really explain how he learned and maintained so many languages, though. You have to keep practising in order to keep the level up - wonder how he does that?

Truly amazing! I am currently learning only my second language (French), although I remember a bit of Spanish from my schooling long ago.

My understanding is that the romance languages are not quite as difficult to add to one's repertoire after the first one is successfully learnt due to their similarities.

His young age and what is probably an inborn ability to learn languages undoubtedly help! His accomplishment is still remarkable!

Some cunning linguists overestimate their skills. They must be evaluated individually.

Re: It makes me sick...

I guess it largely depend on the age he started. I am now at my fourth languages. It is not easy and I mixed the third one with the fourth one quite often for now.

My 3.5 years old speaks and understands already 5!!

Re: It makes me sick...

I wonder exactly how proficient he is at those languages.

Many people speak 5 languages and more but not all of them well.

Also, when can one say that they speak a language?

Re: It makes me sick...

Have you watched the video? Granted, of the languages he speaks I only speak Spanish, French and German (in that order), but they sounded good to me. He clearly has a natural talent for it, but he must have worked really hard, too. I just wonder how anyone has enough time to learn and maintain so many languages.

Re: It makes me sick...

I speak 3 languages (not that well) even though I spent 3 years learning Latin which is supposed to help, but I just don't have a natural talent.

I knew this chap who spoke 8 languages perfectly and even admitted that he learnt them very quickly and did have a natural gift.

I would love to be fluent in at least 2 but I know that it is never going to happen
