Decline of UK civilisation?

After seeing that celebrity "traveller" Paddy Doherty won Celebrity Big Brother, I am convinced that the UK has entered into an irreversible decline. How on earth could he even get on this show let alone win it?

To get to know Paddy better, check out his hilarious You Tube clip from a bare knuckle fight back in 1990.

Re: Decline of UK civilisation?

The fact Celebrity Big Brother exists at all should be all the proof you needed that UK has been in decline for some years now.

Re: Decline of UK civilisation?

Please remember it is just a T.V. show. Just because the producers think he is a celebrity does not actually make him a celebrity.

Also, people want to be entertained. If a person is boring he/she will get voted out, if they are entertaining they will stay.

I think the correct title should be "Decline of UK entertainment (or what is classed as entertainment)"

Isn't Big Brother (the TV show, not George Orwell's creation) a Dutch invention?

Re: Decline of UK civilisation?

It's hardly main stream TV though, didn't even get enough viewers for C4 so they dumped it and C5 bought it.

Getting any Celebrities for a program on C5 is going to be a huge ask.

I saw him on Celebrity Juice, he's nearly a retard, I don't think he managed to say anything he was so dim witted.

Was funny to watch Keith Lemon taking the piss out of him though.

Watched a couple of episodes of Bergerac recently. Already a different world and a totally different standard of entertainment. RIP BBC

Wait... you're asking how someone could get on Big Brother? And you're watching Big Brother?

And then you're complaining about it?

Um.

Well yes - and no... UK TV is still way above the parapet in many ways- but the recent changes do reflect changes in society. We have the TV and the Press we deserve really. If people didn't buy the Daily Watsits and the Sun - they would disappear. Same with TV - audience numbers will decide.

I asked a teenage girl neighbour in the UK (still have a flat there and go regularly) what she wanted to do later. 'A celebrity' she replied. 'Ah, great, I said, so what sort of celebrity, a singer, an actress, sport, politics, ? What sort of celebrity?' 'I don't care, she replied, just a celebrity'. Where is that Face Palm picture, duh. (:

Although I agree that it is only TV, more shocking is the fact that who wins Big Brother, Britain's got talent etc. etc. makes the headlines of the news...

That in itself is a much more damning statement of the situation in the UK IMO.

“The BBC has tried before, with the disastrous Fame Academy and the semi-disastrous So You Think You Can Dance, to grab a slice of the Simon Cowell pie. But Cowell’s formats – The X Factor and BGT – have a nakedly commercial aim: an attempt to find acts that can be signed up to his record labels or shipped to theatres around the UK in TV spin-off tours… But, if a singer or group discovered through a BBC format ends up topping the charts, the whole process feels more uneasy. What’s the public service imperative in making someone famous and rich and increasing the profits of a record company you don’t own?” -- Remote Controller on The Voice (BBC1) and Britain’s Got Talent (ITV1)

But the news is to reflect what people are discussing. this must be what they are talking about, so it makes the news headlines.

I don't see why this is judged as the success of a nation. Would you prefer a government run news agency perhaps with strictly morally acceptable stories released carefully each day ?

I never said I watched the show, I just heard that he won it. In fact, I've never seen any episode of any Big Brother show. I'm just astonished that Paddy can get on any TV show. What do people find entertaining about him?

I agree that the news should reflect current topics and events, but with the comercial nature of television these days I have no faith in news headlines, not even BBC headlines.

As for entertainment, yes, we do vote by watching or not watching... Some watch out of interest, others watch for the cringe factor, point being the numbers are up, the ads generate revenue and then the show is 'popular' and 'news worthy'. Silly cycle me thinks...
