Sending Money Order or Check to USCIS for Green Card

We are applying for my wife's (Swiss Citizen) Green Card and need to send either a money order or a 'check' to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services in Chicago.
We think UBS can make something where we would have to pay CHF 50 but are looking for a less expensive option if it exists.

We bank with UBS & PostFinance

Any information would be helpful. Please PM me if possible.

Cheers,

Derek

Could you pay it instead electronically at the Bern Embassy´s account ?

USCIS Advice on payments

Important Notice - New Application Fees: Effective April 13, 2012, the Department of State will decrease the immigrant visa application processing fees for all immigrant visa categories. Fees paid on or after April 13, 2012 will reflect the new fee amounts. The National Visa Center will resend the Immigrant Visa Application Processing Fee bill to those individuals who have yet to pay.

Immigrant visa application processing fees will be reduced to the following amounts:

Immediate relative and family preference visa applications– $230 per applicant
Employment-based visa applications – $405 per applicant
Other immigrant visa applications (including I-360) – $220 per applicant
For more information, review the Press Release and Fees for Visa Services.

Re: Sending Money Order or Check to USCIS for Green Card

The problem is that everything is going though Chicago now. I will send the guys here an e-mail in Bern to see if they can assist, but from what they were telling me before - everything has to be received and approved in Chicago - then they send the approval to Bern to start the processing locally.

Payment needs to be sent with the application from what I am understanding.

Those new fees are interesting too ...

Re: Sending Money Order or Check to USCIS for Green Card

Just received the DL from the USCIS just in case anyone may have to do this in the future:

USCIS (Citizen and Immigration Services) is a different entity from the USDS (US Dept. Of State)

Fees from both are different because they deal with different 'visa' issues

Fees for USCIS can ONLY be paid by Check or Money Order ($420) and need to be made out
to "Department of Homeland Security" - these have to be sent with documentation to the Dropbox in Chicago, IL.

Back to my initial question ... anyone know how a cheaper alternative than the CHF 50 'Money Order'?

Cheers,

Derek

Open a Charles Schwab share dealing account & they will give you a US $ check book.

Re: Sending Money Order or Check to USCIS for Green Card

It's amazing that people still use checks nowadays. My wife just said "1995 called, they would like their checkbook back" ... thought it was fitting.

I will look into the Charles Schwab account. THx. FMF.

even simpler... ask a friend who has a US bank account to write a check for you, and reimburse them in CHF locally. that's assuming that DHS or whoever doesn't care about the name on the check...

Re: Sending Money Order or Check to USCIS for Green Card

Just to close this up - as Dino says, if one has someone local who will do that then that is a great option.

But if not, you have to do like us and bite the bullet for 50 CHF. I went to UBS yesterday and they put me in a conference room where I had a one-on-one with some suit. REALLY weird! He asked me all kinds of questions and had forms I had to fill out. But that is how it goes. Money order is not given straight ahead but mailed to you in 1-2 business days. Except it must be picked up at the post as they won't deliver it to your home.
