That's what I did with someone who gave me the first red blob because in a context where everyone was criticizing the Swiss (you know - laundry time, appointments with friends made months in advance etc) I said something like "Siwss are OK, really, but my goal in life is not becoming a Swiss, i can manage with who I am"..then that person chased me around EF to give me more red blobs. Thankfully, she's not around anymore, but I guess she has moved to "the other side"...Moah aha haha!!!

*Mia, it0s not high school, it's kindergarten playground.

I'm Ok with kindergarten, I was starting to feel old. :P

I don't worry about the reds anymore. Don't get me wrong, I don't want anymore!

Really? A lot of Swiss I know do talk about the war and have no taboos in bringing it up.

20 Shades of Grau in Switzerland? It was a terrible time and people just want to move on. However, the older folks would be glad to share any WWII stories but remember, most stories are about rationing and tougher financial times.
A lot of the stories I heard are about Gereral Guisan and keeping up good spirits in tough times and generally have a positive and motivational feel to them.

Re: Can someone please enlighten me...

Why is it taboo to make reference to something that did, in fact, happen? Isn't there a saying that goes something like:

If you don't acknowledge the past, then it is doomed to repeat itself.

(Yeah, I know I didn't quote that correctly)

Isn't the history of WWII taught in schools here? I would hope so!

Anyways... if anyone expects to go through life without ever encountering something that offends them, I think they're a bit delusional.

It's not.

Rule No. 1:
Don't believe everything you read.

Rule No. 2:
Don't believe everything expats tell you.

Rule No. 3:
Toughen up or people will walk over you.

It's not taboo. The point was more about your analogy not being really quite right () than bringing it up at all. Although you'll be hard pressed to find anyone in Spain who will talk about Franco.

Anyway, isn't our red-blobber from a country that is particularly sensitive about the issue?

Really? I've had lots of conversations about Franco in Spain, espcially with older people. Mostly they start the topic themselves, even if it's just something along the lines of:

"This TV show is cr*p"
"Yeah, if Franco were still around he wouldn't have allowed it".

Or walk into any decent bookstore in Spain and you'll find a whole section of books on all different aspects on Franco and the Civil War.

LOL. Does that actually lead to any deeper discussion of the topic?

Anyway it goes to show we all have our own perspectives.

Re: Can someone please enlighten me...

I have no idea where he's from. He's just creepy. And apparently I'm not the only one on here who thinks so, because quite a few people have messaged me after seeing this thread.
Anyways, if that had been the first red blobbie and strange comment that he had ever given me, then my reaction would be different. It's just strange that he seems to expect the entire forum to share his sentiments; and when they don't, he assumes he is in a position to "educate" them.

So... this thread has served its purpose. I now understand why this guy took offense to my analogy. But I guess I could understand that more had I used the analogy in a literal context.

I guess we all have "issues" that we are more sensitive about than others will be.

I'm telling you, if we all red blobbied him as much as he red blobbies others I think he'd never recover!

Why not? If you sweep it under the rug and pretend like it didn't happen in order to never offend anyone then history is doomed to repeat itself. If you can laugh at Nazis on the Moon, however, maybe history has a chance. It's like bringing up Israel with an American over coffee....few want to dance with that bear as it's a taboo topic but the result is that it never gets discussed.

Not to mention why do the Nazis get a pass when every US transgression in times of war, etc, except of course helping liberate Europe at the end of WWII, tends to get trotted out whenever convenient.

There should be guilt as it was not one person acting alone, but perspective, humor and resolve to not repeat the past is a more effective approach than 'sssshhh, don't offend anyone!'

I do wonder.

The OP did liken her kid's teachers to the Gestapo, not to Homeland Security. So America hasn't quite got there yet.

Quite a few of my fellow Americans have even told me that they think 911 happened because the Muslims are jealous of our way of life!

As for the red blobbie. Some people throw them around. In the X years I've been on here, I've red blobbied very few people, 5 tops. Others feel they need to use up all their red blobbie points. No red blobbie point should go to waste!
Strange! I had the impression you were one of the people who threw them around, having red-blobbed me in a tit for tat exchange for the one I gave you some time back

Not bad from someone who groan on an average of 1 per every 4 posts she writes... And we don't see how often you give or take reps.

You red-blobbed her first and then complain she was throwing red blobs around? That's good.

So it started with the Gestapo and ends in a Kindergarden.

Partly true, but most of all nobody wants to get labelled anti-jew or anti-semite if they voice the opinion that Israel really shouldn't be getting all that money from the US, etc., etc. You can't understand that which you can't discuss or read a variety of opinions about.

Well....that's a different ball of wax, one that starts with an F and ends with an X.
