Can someone please enlighten me...

I just noticed that someone on this forum recently gave me a red blobbie for using the word "Gestapo" in a thread. He also wrote: "Think twice before using the word Gestapo."

I'm confused.

This same person has given me red blobbies before, which is fine but... I find him quite creepy because his reasoning never makes sense to me. He has even implied that he thinks his red blobbies are the virtual equivalent of "a death sentence." It's as though he can't handle anything that even slightly offends him. And I'm starting to feel a bit "picked on" by this guy, which is fine but... again, it's a bit creepy.

Can someone please enlighten me as to why I am not "allowed" to use the word "Gestapo?"

In my post, I had used it in a cynical and metaphorical context -- in reference to the fact that the Gestapo was harsh and cruel. So I guess I can only understand this guy's negative reaction if he was actually in support of the Gestapo.

Thanks!

Re: Can someone please enlighten me...

Yeah, I thought about doing that, but I'm afraid to provide a link because the guy probably groaned me, and out of respect for him, I don't want to reveal who he is.

But basically, in my post, I had metaphorically (and cynically) related the Swiss Kindergarten system to the Gestapo, after someone had received a letter telling them that they needed to attend a hearing. Perhaps it wasn't the best analogy, but I certainly didn't expect my use of the word "Gestapo" to seriously offend anyone.

Ha ha... I actually kind of like the red blobbie. It's like the virtual equivalent of a spanking.

I'm just trying to understand it.

Someone just gave me a green blobbie and wrote:

"It seems to me he is the real gestapo!"

Priceless!

They didn't, so not to worry, the irrational offender's identity is safe for another day.

Ok red blobbies on their way...

In answer to your original question, I can only assume that the person is a bit touchy about the use of the word Gestapo and it's Nazi links. Maybe he works in a school and doesn't like being compared to a Gestapo officer even if it's sacastic. (stating the obvious)

Re: Can someone please enlighten me...

Yeah, he probably thought my analogy was unjust, which is fine. But I was confused as to why he couldn't pick up on the cynicism in my comment. And again, he's given me quite a few red blobbies and creepy accompanying comments before.

Anyways... I just want to give a proper "thanks!" to those of you who have given me green blobbies in response to this thread (two of you I wasn't able to leave messages for to thank personally).

It's nice to know that the freedom of speech is still alive and kicking in this forum.

Wow. Strange how some people seem to think it's completely taboo to say anything even slightly negative about Switzerland... and fail to realize that everyone experiences things here (and life in general) differently.

It wasn't the red blob that bothered me, though... it was just that I was feeling a little 'creeped out' by this guy... again. And couldn't grasp why anyone could be so seriously offended by my comment. But thankfully, this thread has returned that warm, fuzzy feeling to my loin chops.

Creepy behaviour. Name and shame, we should allow reasonable non insulting free speech on the Forum!

I too regularly receive groans and red blobbies: it reflects back on them of course: it shows them to be weak and opinionated sneaks.

If you disagree, then be a man and stand up and say so! Why do you send a secret message when you obviously intend to change my opinion? I WILL ignore that!

Re: Can someone please enlighten me...

To be honest, when I read your post I though it was completely inappropriate as well as I think even in the US we have truancy laws as well. You'll get knock on the door from the Po'lice if your kid is not in school. So to pull out the "gestapo" card was a bit OTT.

I also think Americans have a much less serious take on the horrors of WWII. We tend to use "gestapo", "nazi", "gulag" etc much much more than in Europe that actually had close up & personal experience.

Anyway, after the initial cringe, I just moved on not wanting to get into the whole reasoning why using gestapo is probably not something that should be thrown around.

But my two minute explanation would be: Basically, the argument for not throwing the word around is that you are diminishing what happened and what these people really did. It was horrendous, shameful, etc. Not at all the equivalent of asking parents to come in for a meeting about whether their child was in mandatory schooling.

That's the best 2 min explanation I can do right no.

As for the red blobbie. Some people throw them around. In the X years I've been on here, I've red blobbied very few people, 5 tops. Others feel they need to use up all their red blobbie points. No red blobbie point should go to waste!

Anyway, throw him in ignore and don't worry about it. Next time he red blobbie you, you won't even see it!
