Re: who has a robot vacuum roomba/samsung

Our cables are velcroed or bubblewrapped, no issues. Mon-Wed-Fri 09:30 until it's done. I cannot recommend the Roombas enough, not used a standup vac for two years.

Re: who has a robot vacuum roomba/samsung

Well, I have been looking at upgrading R2D2 (Roomba 650) and C3P0 (Roomba 770) for a single solution that intelligently maps the apartment and returns to the charger before returning to the cleaning, a la Roomba 980, and I have come across some interesting stuff.

Xiaomi, a highly respected Chinese electronics manafacturer known for releasing very technically advanced products for low prices, have released their own vacuum bot, the Xiaomi Mi (also called Xiaomi Mijia).

Specs here: http://www.roboticstrends.com/articl..._dyson_360_eye

More detailed review here: http://www.vacuumsguide.com/xiaomi-m...acuum-cleaner/

Youtube comparison vs Roomba 980

It seems to have most of the functions of the Roomba 980, in fact it has a higher suction rating and a battery around 1.5x more powerful, for half the price! 30% smaller bin, but this shouldn't be a problem with regular cleaning.

It can be bought here https://www.tvc-mall.com/details/xia...84990099a.html and here http://www.gearbest.com/robot-vacuum...46.html?wid=21

The only place to buy seems to be wholesale from China, and price to CH seems to be around 450chf or so, but I may well take a punt.

Gearbest will ship to CH for €380 , if you have a German pick-up point 315.

Re: who has a robot vacuum roomba/samsung

A quick glance at the photos of the Xiaomi robot suggests that it sports regular, bristled brushes. The Roomba has an innovative silicone brush with no bristles, which I've found to be excellent for my house with its long-haired inhabitants (one girlfriend, one dog and two cats). I'd be concerned about the bristled brush getting wrapped up in discarded hairs, just as the older Roombas' brushes did.

For half of the price of the Roomba, is that really an issue? I have had the bristle-based Roombas for years with zero issues (admittedly I have no long-haired pets), and considering every Roomba below the recently-released 900 series uses bristled brushes, clearly they seem to work very well. The Neato units also use bristles and beats the Roombas in many tests. The brushless rollers are neat, but lets not overestimate their effects for the majority of households.

Yes, it's an issue. It wouldn't matter if the unit were one tenth the price of the Roomba, if it doesn't perform due to the brushes being clogged, it's not worth buying. The Roomba 600-series stops working and shouts out an error message ("Clean brushes") when the brushes get wrapped with too much hair (which is often -- maybe twice per week). I use a 600-series for the cellar, where the cats' litter box is located, and 980s on the other floors of the house. The bristled brushes suffer badly from hair interventions.

By the way, the silicone rollers were introduced before the 900 series, I can't remember exactly when. (ETA: they were featured on the 800 series from 2013.) It's certainly not true that "every Roomba below the recently-released 900 series uses bristled brushes", and they certainly seem not to work very well (compared to the silicone rollers) when there is hair around!

I'd love to be convinced by the Xiaomi robot but even the tester in the video you linked conceded that the Roomba would probably be better in households with pets and/or hard floors (and girlfriends).

Maybe your conditions are much harsher than the average household then, as bristled brushes have never been more than an additional maintenance requirement for the vast majority of Roomba users over the years, and certainly hasn't stopped their successful performance on the whole as the professional reviews or many thousands of user reviews on all Amazon sites attest to (The Roomba 650 being a particular example). https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p...nid=2528832011

However as I said I can't speak for that as I don't have pets, so for me this is not an issue and never has been in the 5 or so years I have owned a Roomba, so I really don't see any cause for concern and for half the price of the Roomba 980 with almost all of the same technology (and indeed additional laser mapping) it is an absolute bargain vs competing units.

Exactly, no robot could get even close to its quality.

Haha I don't think anyone is questioning that. The question here is which is a better robot vacuum

I am thinking of the Xiaomi Mi vacuum now. I have used their phones and other devices before and they were pretty well done.

The new version looks great (and would dearly lopve a scond roomba for upstairs), but almost 1000 CHF? Was very very luck to get a 780 five years ago for just over 400 CHF! (good old http://www.toppreise.ch).

It is indeed a crazy and artificially inflated price. I bought both of my Roombas used and they have been champs. The battery on one has died so I have just ordered a couple of replacements off of Amazon for 35chf each to bring them both back up to fighting strength.

However, I'm still very interested in that Xiaomi Mi to avoid me having to run two of them as it would just do the whole house, go and charge up when needed, and then get back to work, which is pretty damn awesome.

Well, I replaced the batteries, brushes and front wheels on my Roombas and wow, they are now back to fighting form, nimble and spry and collecting tons of muck. The new batteries were 3rd party ones with a large capacity and they last way longer than the originals.

I should receive my new Xiaomi Mi Robot this or next week upon which time I will be giving my robot children to new foster parents on the forum. Considering how emotionally attached I am to them, that is going to be a wee bit heartbreaking. *sniffle*.

OH nearly bought me one a few years ago, but we just couldn't justify paying double or more from a regular vacuum. I have to say there are days I wish we'd just done it. The regular vac is a total pain even though it is small. Have to take out all the various parts, assemble, change heads for different tasks, and unplug-replug 3 times in our small flat just to do the job (cord is shorter for safety reasons or something). Maybe someday...
Unless you really can't afford a new vacuum, then keeping one that causes you such bother just for the sake of saving a few francs seems to be cutting your nose off to spite yoor face?

It is a bit of a pain to "prep" the room for the roomba: cables need to be off the floor, we put the chairs up on the table so the legs are out of the way, I have to pick up the cats' toys... but overall, it does a good job.

Roomba does a good job once you removed everything that stays in its way, which is a bit of a pain for me too...but I would say that while it does a surprisingly good job, I wouldn't count only on Roomba. Roomba is excellent for maintaining. I also have a Dyson Cinetic for a more thorough cleaning - corners, edges and top of the furniture, carpets (I have a couple of carpets that are nice but a pain to clean) So, for me it's both. I wouldn't give up on any of them.
