Re: who has a robot vacuum roomba/samsung

Well guys, now that my Roomba children have been sold it is time to give my report on the newest member of the family... the Xiaomi Mi Robot (MiRo). My aim was to replace my 2x Roombas (650 and 760) with one intelligent device that would do my entire apartment without any fuss.

Ordering, cost and delivery:

I purchased from Aliexpress and total cost was around 400-450chf including postage https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2016...d-6975b1a76594

Bear in mind that the Chinese sellers almost always put the item value down as 20chf or so in order to avoid customs tax. Mine was labelled as a "$19 sweeper".

Looks and build:

It is a well-built and lovely looking piece of kit, with an Apple-esque vibe about it. Parts are easy to access and remove and also feel solid. Also very easy to empty and clean and I find it more convenient than my Roombas in that regard.

One point worth mentioning is that the charging base is higher than the Roomba, so it does not fit where it did previously in my dining room under my IKEA Besta sideboards, and instead fits under my IKEA Hemnes cupboards in my bedroom, so this is something to keep an eye on if you expect it to slot into the place where your Roomba was.

Setup and remote app:

--------------------------------
UPDATE 21.04.2017 - YESSSSS as of today I have noticed that following an update my app is now in ENGLISH! Xiaomi translated it and also there is an option to download an English voice pack for the vacuum. Go Xiaomi!
--------------------------------

There is an app you can use to perform the initial set-up, remotely control and view real-time performance and statistics on the Mi Robot as well as adjust various settings. It is mostly in Chinese but setup and getting it on the WiFi network wasn't bad at all with the Youtube translation video, and some bits of the app are in English amusingly enough.

With the app you receive an alert when the schedules cleaning starts, and then you can fully monitor the MiRo as it goes on it's travels, and the app even shows a map of my apartment along with a line representing every move and turn that the MiRo has made. See attached photo as an example.

The robot voice is also in Chinese, and it's quite funny to hear the female Chinese lady saying stuff in response to the commands.

Translation video is here:

Cleaning performance:

My apartment is:
  • 83m2
  • Hard floors in all rooms with one carpet in living room
  • Not open plan, so all separate rooms

It seems to clean my apartment very well. It really is amazing to see how intelligently it maps too, it has some kind of radar thing on the back that is constantly scanning the area to build up an image of the surroundings.

It does an extremely thorough and methodical job of cleaning, too, without aggressively bumping into stuff like the Roomba. It seems to pick up crud and bits (within reason) without any issue and also does a decent job on the carpet in my living room, which looks like it's been properly hoovered when I get home. There are three options for suction strength and I keep the MiRo on the highest setting as it seems to make a difference and doesn't impact the battery 'too' much.

When it is finished (or if it theoretically was about to run out of battery) it literally heads straight back, unerringly, to the charging base from wherever it is inside or outside of the room where the base is located. The Roombas in comparison fudged their way there very slowly and semi-randomly. It's impressive to watch. When done, just lift open the lid and empty the bin, it's easier and less fiddly than my Roomba was.

Review here (and many more searchable on Youtube):

Battery life:

To clean my 83m2 apartment on standard suction mode it used only 20% battery. I then switched to High suction mode and it finished the clean with 65% battery left. That is some epic battery life, and it should be great for large apartments. If it does run out of juice it goes back to base to charge and then goes back out to continue where it left off. It doesn't get much more hassle-free than that. The battery also charges VERY quickly, about 5x faster than my Roomba, and is Lithium Ion so much more durable and longer lasting.

Accessories and maintenance:

Accessories can easily be ordered via Aliexpress or Gearbest if you search. https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale...nktest=0&tc=af

As I said earlier it's easy to access stuff so I can't see there being a problem swapping parts out as and when you need to. I recommend buying spare filters and brushes as a complete kit straight away so you have some spare from the beginning which will make it easier when the time comes to change things. They seem cheaper than Roomba spare parts too!

Conclusion:

As much as I loved my Roombas, the MiRO is just a far superior piece of kit. It is comparable (and in some ways better) to the newest Roomba 980 and less than half the price. Yes, you need to buy from China, but personally I think it is worth the risk and was a relatively smooth process.

My goal of replacing my Roombas has been achieved and then some. A definite great purchase.

Does it slam into things as much as the Roomba or does it have the smarts to 'see' what's around? I have to reposition a subwoofer pretty much every time my little guy comes out to play.

Re: who has a robot vacuum roomba/samsung

Roomba is a bit waste of money, but there are other brands which are actually making cleaning robots which are worth it. I don't say Roomba is bad, but there are better things available like Neato.

There is only the iRobot Scooba series. Google reviews.

EDIT - I correct myself, apparently there is a Braava Jet 240 which wet mops and is according to reports very good! I may pick one up this weekend and let you know... http://uk.pcmag.com/irobot-braava-jet-240

If any home appliance has earned the right to talk dirty, it's a robot vacuum.

I hate floor mopping, so it seems like this would be ideal to be able to let loose in specific and closed off rooms on a daily basis when I go out. Small, light, and ideal for 1 room use.

Thanks for the detailed presentation. Got a roomba around 2005 ('cause new technical gadgets I just can't resist ) and was seriously not impressed.
While roomba generally still seems to have the same problems as back then, the one you bought now looks mighty tempting.

So I purchased an iRobot Braava 240 Jet. It seems to do a decent job, and does around 20m2 on one tank of water, and can do 40m2 or maybe more (I didn't do more than two runs in one session) on one battery. Some larger rooms take at least two tanks of water to clean, and I used 1x of the disposable swiffers that come with it for 2 tanks of cleaning, simply by giving it a quick rinse after one clean. To compensate for the weakening of the cleaning agent caused by washing the swiffer, I sprayed a bit of multi-purpose cleaning agent on the floor where it was going to clean which seemed to do the job.

I used it in the kitchen and the dining room and both seemed like and clean and shiny when it had finished, though I'm sure that my kitchen needs a good steam clean. The dining room parkett was also looking clean afterwards.

One annoying thing is that the swiffers, despite being cheaper here in CH than the USA or UK, seem to be end of life in Mecia Markt. They can still be ordered, but you have to go into a store to do so and get them to order it manually. I ordered 5 packs and will maybe order 5 more to keep me going.

It can be controlled with bluetooth although I haven't tried that yet as I don't see the need. It seems to do a decent job of cleaning though, and would be especially good for maintaining already clean floors.
