Tongs / Claw Device - What is it really ?

I bought one of these yesterday at a second-hand shop in Zurich.

I found one for sale on Etsy, claiming it's an 'ice cube' or 'sugar cube' tongs ?

Any other ideas ?

I have one of those! My dad used to collect them and when he sold his collection he gave me one as a keepsake.

Used for serving out sugar cubes.

If your kids are into Harry Potter, sugar tongs get a mention in the Chamber of Secrets, chapter 3. (Yes, I am a sad person who has read Harry Potter too many times for their own good.)

Funnily enough I was watching "Bargain Hunt" from my sick bed last week and they had one of these on there.
It is for sugar cubes as has been mentioned

To me these are sugar tongs, yours look like some kind of gynaecological device!
ps I love Harry Potter too.
