Re: Smokers Vs Non-smokers

Interesting opposing views here.

Now try this one: A couple weeks ago we took advantage of the bank offer of a boat trip for Sfr5. We decided on our boat, and on paying were offered, for an extra Sfr10 each to be upgraded to the "first class" section on the upper open/partially enclosed deck - (where smoking is allowed).

Being a bit crowded, my friend (the smoker) did not light up, until a party of four to our right (upwind) of us, lit up. Then he lit up. The other group to our left ( a group of cackling peace disturbing females) made a huge issue of being downwind and moved themselves to the other side of boat, and eventually inside to the top of the stairway (?!) to escape the other smokers.

The issue here is, everyone had paid extra for this position. The non-smokers had also obviously paid extra, BUT why? It was obviously a smoking area - with huge ashtrays in evidence everywhere - WHY did they choose to encroach where they would be offended?

An interesting side issue here is that the attraction of this one boat was that it had a glass viewing area LOWER down (non-smoking) denied to the upper deck.

Maybe they weren't properly informed...or maybe they didn't understand the venue Why haven't you asked them?

Re: Smokers Vs Non-smokers

Worst thing about living in Europe, without question, the rampant smoking...I'm still trying to comprehend how a progressive country like Suisse still hasn't improved enough over the years

(emphasis mine)

Firstly:
The portion under discussion is somehow labeled as "first class" ... aside from being able to smoke there, what else (if anything) is different? More comfy seats? Table service? What?

Secondly:
It was the upper deck. Better view.

At the risk of being long-winded I do hereby reply. The cashier on the boat had the same long discussions with each customer ....the queu dragged along .......

"Would you like to "upgrade" (pay more) for the upper deck? BUT you cannot then view thru the glass panels below" (to see below water).

" No thank you, we want to view the Vierwaltstättersee above water level!"

"Oh you can still see the land the same, except there is a glass viewing panel to watch the underwater sealife".

"May we smoke up there?"

"Yes, that is the ONLY smoking area".

"Ok, thanks, yes, we`ll take two "upgraded" tickets".(Upgraded for US as we had only intended using the Sfr5 vouchers, and ended up paying more)

Seats the same throught the boat. Lovely seats, covered in white plastic leather-look stuff. Lovely ashtrays - big solid things standing next to all the seats, with chrome tops and grids to stop ash blowing out.

Ok, so in our ignorance, we called that "1st class".
Why?
Because the last time we took a train trip (to Austria), we did not realise that ONLY in 1st class is there a "smoking lounge".
Like plebs, we were stuck in the 2nd class carriages without the advantages of the elite, which we now wished to partake of as well.

Oh, and, the very first customers onto the boat were an elderly English couple, the man had a cigar in his mouth while buying their tickets and wanted to sit where he could smoke.

So, they also went upstairs to the top, and occupied a middle seat, right in the entrance-way from the steps, in full view of anyone going up there, puffing away on his big stinky cigar.

Soooooo ... those girls .....imo... they were just looking for an opportunity to wrinkle their noses and practice their disgruntledness. They were sitting right in front of one of those huge ashtrays and using it as a table for their handbags.

Smokers are prepared to pay more for their own comfort. Those who want to impose themselves, like those who wanted smokers OUT of the restaurants, now want the outside for themselves as well, and the smokers must now be enclosed inside? And in winter? Are the non-smokers going to still want to sit outside? .... hahaaaaa.......
