Calgary, AB to Vancouver, BC circa 1000 km - tips needed

I found a great deal for less than CHF520 rtn from UK airports for next May.

Having never been to the Eastern side of the Rockies, I thought I would give it a go to Calgary, Banff and Jasper and eventually depart from Vancouver ( a city I have visited before but from Seattle ).

I am tempted to go with Moose TN ( Hoodapus route ) being an independent traveller and although love travel with railways, simply cannot afford the prices ( too rich for my blood ).

Questions for those in the know:

Ground and onboard service with Canadian Affair ( Discount code is Red Hot Canada btw ) - how would you rate them ?

Moose TN ( is there an alternate like provider ? )

Must do´s / sees between Calgary and Vancouver.

Appreciated your posts on the thread. TIA.

I'm not familiar with the tour companies but I can recommend some pretty spots in the area. It also depends a bit if you prefer beautiful landscapes or cities...

I'd recommend Canmore (20 minutes from Banff but less touristy) and just as pretty. I can recommend some restaurants there if you want. You might lucky and see some wildlife...elk, bears, etc.

I'd stop at Shushwap Lake near Salmon Arm for a swim or canoe on your way through the Rockies.

I'd stop in the Peachland/Summerland area and do some wine tours or check out the Kettle Valley Railway (you can bike it too I think).

You could check out White Rock or Langley, not too far from Vancouver, the sunniest part of the lower mainland and very pretty. Whistler.

I'd take the ferry to the saltspring Islands or make my way to Tofino for some whale-watching or surf lessons.

If you're into cities, Calgary has the biggest rodeo in the world called Stampede every summer. Victoria would probably be my top pick of cities in the western half of Canada.

Wow .. simply gold! Many thanks. I will do my homework on them.

I pretty much like a bit cities, landscapes ( mountains are a yes ) as well as interaction with the locals and fellow travellers.

If you stop in Canmore (mountain town) for supper, I'd recommend supper at The Trough, don't be dissuaded by the name. It's fine dining but in a cozy atmosphere and good value for money, definitely by swiss standards.

Now I want to go back too. *drool*

First question - how long are you staying? That will determine a lot of what you can and can't do.

Tours - if the Hoodapus route is too much $, I honestly don't know if you are going to find an escorted tour that is less covering that much ground. It is pretty much the equivalent of a western europe tour, just not as many borders BUT the cost of renting a car will be really high as well, so with all things considered, a tour might be the best way to cover that much ground and see some of the highlights without the added stress of having to drive yourself!
