I honestly thought that was a post about a man with chainsaw for hire - to cut down trees and the sort. Like 'man with van' type posts. I was like meh! I don't need to cut down any trees, I won't check out that thread.

Also, my military training was in 1994/1995. We didn't get to shoot (or hear) many different kinds of small-arms, much less something like an AK47 or an M16

Yes, we had terrorist attacks on US forces or politicians, with explosives and automatic weapons.
But "going postal" was an American thing. We covered it in school.

Nothing new, sadly. I remember an incident in Baden a few years back, this guy had been cleaned out at the casino, went home, got his army gun, went into the bar at the Kappelerhof and blasted the place. They could still keep ammunition at home in those days.

One kid was killed, unfortunately.

Dunno about you, but I've never heard a gun fired in anger [1], and the only ones I have ever heard at all would be shotguns and small bore pistols (the latter just once when we had a company outing to a firing range).

Oh, I tell a lie, as I think some of the local hunters here in Alsace may use rifles for wild bore, so it's possible that some of the distant bangs we hear very occasionally may be hunting rifles, but I wouldn't know the difference in sound.

I've been chased by a juvenile Valaisanne before - I'm convinced it was my red sleeveless top but others just think it was being playful. I beg to differ, it definitely was charging me - repeatedly

Cows in general I've come across are quite docile and more often spooked by humans, unless they are with their baby or a bull is nearby. In which case I've had farmers remind me to avoid locking eye contact or getting near a baby
