Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. This is what happens when you try to solve complex problems with simple solutions. Mexico and South Africa may not have as many school shootings, but they have 3x and 6x the murder rate of the USA respectively. Is somehting remarkably wrong with their gun legislation too?
Just gotta have your say eh Loz? Nobody here denied any problems in Mexico or SA, we are discussing something else here, regarding gun laws, and shootings in the US and shootings in schools, and it's a problem. You can keep deflecting it, or spinning it another way.

IIRC almost half the population (45% ?) lives in a household with at least one gun.
42%, which means that most households are gun-free.

What percentage of Swiss households have at least one gun?

Tom

Quite a number probably have an assault-rifle ...
I saw a feature on SRF a while ago, where they asked the wives of Swiss men if they knew where the rifle was.

Most didn't - but in a lot of cases, the kids knew and happily chimed in...

Why you think I am firmly on the anti-gun side is beyond me.
Actually, I thought you were on the opposite side. Not sure why you thought otherwise?

My opinion:

I don't think guns have a place in schools at all - which is why I got annoyed at your insistence that there were only two shooting incidents in U.S. schools this year. There were a lot more an din some, it's just down to good luck that no one got killed. You wrote that no kids were in danger but if you think that a gun going off in a classroom is never a danger to children (which is what you wrote) then I really think there is something not quite right with you and if you want to take that personally then please feel free to.

I grew up in a house where guns were used weekly for recreational purposes. My parents won trophies in clay pigeon shooting. My first few jobs were at a gun range. I helped my parents re-load their gun shells starting long before I was old enough to drive. My family tree is full of military and police veterans. Many of my family members concealed-carry legally every day.
What are you actually trying to say here? Most people in the U.K. have army veterans in their family tree. I certainly have.
I used to belong to a gun club, I've fired an assault rifle (AK47) Doesn't make me feel I have the right to bear arms.

US Gun legislation IS a problem - because it allows the unhealthy gun culture to result in children getting massacred.

There's a much healthier (dare I say it more mature) attitude to guns in Switzerland.

They're not part of everyday life and people don't try and make them part of everyday life.

A Swiss person has never offered to show me their gun.

When working in the U.S, I was in the office once for just an hour before two people independently offered to take me to the their ranges and show me their vast collection of guns.

Wait a second, if someone was producing cellphones, microwaves, toasters which took people's lives, then wouldn't the US be the first place to punish the people producing and distributing them?
Or the dreaded, absolutely terrifying....Kinder Egg.

Banned in the U.S. for being far too dangerous. Not allowed in schools or even in the home.

Three children have died worldwide as a result of choking on the toys in the eggs and the U.S. said, "enough, is enough! We must do something about this awful menace - we must ban them!" And they did.

But there is a problem with American gun legislation, there is probably a problem with SA and Mexican gun legislation! What's your point, that there isn't a problem in the US?

Or is it that guns don't kill people, people kill people?

Odd, I have had several show me their arsenals of 100+ weapons, most recently last month!

And of course the work colleagues that bring theirs to work to clean them before shooting practice.

You clearly don't know the right people.

Umm, nobody here does.

I would also go as far to say that cops and metal detectors don't either.

Nor PC.

Meanwhile, today is my wife's birthday, so I bought her some flowers, some tete-de-veau, and a gun.

(OK, a high-power air-rifle)

The USA kills children every day in the far east. Any different to Florida killings?

The point here, is that mass school shootings are media sensations. The US thrives on media sensation. If banning all guns deals with the pop media issue de jour, then that is what everyone will tweet about. Conversely, since such shootings are also big money for the media industry--maybe not.

I'm not sure you are in a position to speak for everyone here.

I'm sure in another thread sometime ago, someone had suggested that if teachers and pupils were armed, schools would be safer.
