According to wikipedia, they are banned in several states and in the others, there appears to be regulation:

Too much hassle I suppose for the average gunslinger.

They are banned. Indeed there is a law under consideration to allow them, on the grounds that shooting practice harms the hearing of the poor dears. If I remember correctly, the police do not like the idea because there would be no flash and no bang (duh), so very hard to identify where the shooter is.

Still, given the ingenuity of American gunowners at avoiding the law, I'm surprised that they are not freely available at gun fairs, or under the counter.

Because they don't work in real life like they do in the movies.

Think of a silenced gun as a Harley with a working muffler.

Also accuracy is reduced, AFAIK.

And anyway, there's not much point in using a silencer when you fire rounds from an assault rifle.

That's not exactly the definition of "subtle".

Muzzle velocity, actually (which in turn will reduce long distance accuracy).

They make plenty of noise even with a working legal muffler.

As does a gun with a silencer.

They both just make LESS noise.
