He left the room to go and fetch the gun, returned and shot her in the back of the head.

From that article:
Currently, it is not clear if any charges will be pressed against either the adults in the home or the child. I don't know. At least they've got the sense not to waste time shooting in the U.S. where the locals seem to be pretty good at shooting each other without outside help.

The first town hit, Carcassonne, is the centre of the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region, with 3 million visitors a year and direct flights from 5 UK airports. A week later when it's Easter school holidays, this could have been a hell of a lot worse than it was. I just hope that the police officer who offered himself as a hostage swap, fully recovers from his injuries.

It's the most expensive kind of target to protect. Major centers may have hardened up defenses, but covering the entire country is really expensive, not to mention difficult.
