Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

Pashosh, in anticipation of your next unresearched question, here are some questions and their multiple choice answers from the NZ Firearm Safety Test.

Should a hunter fall or trip when in the field, their FIRST responsibility is to

A) control the muzzle direction of their firearm.
B) warn their companions by shouting to them.
C) make sure the sights are not damaged by contact with the ground.

If alcohol is to be drunk when firearms are present, when is it appropriate to do so?

A) immediately before leaving on a hunting trip.
B) to celebrate the bagging of a game animal in the field.
C) after firearms have been safely stored away.

To reduce the risk of being shot accidentally while hunting, especially in dimly lit conditions, it is advisable for the shooter to

A) keep to open areas where other hunters can easily identify them.
B) not carry anything that could be mistaken for part of a game animal.
C) Wear brightly coloured gear.
D) Only make sounds and movements that are obviously human.

While hunting, which of the following would be safe to shoot at?

A) an object that was making the relevant sounds and movements.
B) a target that was the right colour and shaped like an animal.
C) an animal that had been observed clearly and was undoubtedly the game sought.

Perhaps now you see why >99% of all applicants are approved, and why I say that the current NZ gun laws are not at all strict.

What's the ratio of sociopaths and healthy minds, though?

Probability stats never stopped derranged people from trying. Not mentioning those who are supported by their own army and combat infrastructures.
WTAF?

Did you mean to quote my post?

A simple number of home-made phones would have sufficed.

The reason 3-D printers are so expensive is not because the nuts and bolts are so expensive but because of the high costs of development and patents that the manufacturers need to recover. Lasers and step motors are all pretty much commodititzed these days.

I was at an industry conference just two weeks ago and there was a lot of talk about 3-D printing and how its going to virtually wipe out the concept of storing spare parts. Big corporations, for example auto makers, are already re-thinking their service and parts supply-chain logistics and are looking at ways of 3-D printing stuff on demand locally rather than shipping and storing it as they do today, which is costly and inflexible. There are already non plastic 3-D printed parts being sold commercially by leading OEMs right now. When the tipping point is reached, this will grow exponentially.

<shakes head> just about all of this post is wrong, the vast majority of 3d printers are totally open source no patents or anything else. please just stop posting crap you've heard or skim read, mass manufacturing will always be quicker and cheaper then 3d printing, we are decades away from anything changing. Its no surprise this forums 2 biggest trolls have jumped onto this and continue to argue black is white.

I know you are surprised by the analogy. That doesn't surprise me

The point a bunch of people are trying to make - everything is already being made at home. And what is not, will be soon.

Home made phones? You mean radios? Receivers/transmitters? Ask commie dissent? You need some?

Quick, though, before they ban the access to the parts.

seriously?? you're equating moores law to chemistry / physics and manufacturing ???? and expect to be taken seriously???

3d printing is limited to the materials they use, sure someone could come up with a machine that can melt and use steel but you'd not want that in your house. I've already said it, but I'll say it again, there will not be a 'home' 3d printer in our lifetime that can print a viable what we would consider normal gun.

I do wonder how many people jumping on this band wagon have ever even seen a 3d printer let alone have the faintest idea how they work. or for that matter a gun!!
Here's a parallel: TIG, or Heliarc welding.

The process was developed in the early '40s, and compared to other welding methods, it is one heck of a lot better (if more difficult to master).

TIG, for home use, only became affordable in the last decade or so.

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

BTW, anyone wanting to read Branton Tarrant's manifesto can do so here.

Of particular relevence to this thread:

Quote:
Why did you choose to use firearms?

I could have chosen any weapons or means.A TATP filled rental van.
Household flour, a method of dispersion and an ignition source.A
ballpeen hammer and a wooden shield.Gas,fire,vehicular attacks,plane
attacks, any means were available. I had the will and I had the resources.

I chose firearms for the affect it would have on social discourse, the extra
media coverage they would provide and the affect it could have on the
politics of United states and thereby the political situation of the world.

The US is torn into many factions by its second amendment, along state,
social, cultural and, most importantly, racial lines.

With enough pressure the left wing within the United states will seek to
abolish the second amendment, and the right wing within the US will see
this as an attack on their very freedom and liberty.

This attempted abolishment of rights by the left will result in a dramatic
polarization of the people in the United States and eventually a fracturing
of the US along cultural and racial lines.

I’m actually surprised at the facepalm-level of discussion because there’s no real counter-argument supporting the current lack of control of seni-automatic weapons.

Comedy gold.

Turbine blades for aero engines are already being 3D printed, without a furnace. Parts are being emailed to the ISS to be printed directly in space. Consider that Deep Blue, the IBM manufactured chess computer that beat Garry Kasparov was one of the most expensive and powerful computers in the world in 1996, and within 10 years the same processing power that it possessed was available in a Playstation 3. Perhaps it's you that should appreciate the cusp of technological advancement we currently find ourselves on.
"without a furnace!"
Sounds like a furnace to me! "Fine metal powder is melted locally by a high-energy fiber laser in the build chamber"
Source

Definition furnace; an enclosed structure in which material can be heated to very high temperatures.

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

so just to close this tangent down

no one will go on a shooting rampage with a 3d printed gun in our lifetime and probably not in your kids lifetime either, unless its with a lazer gun, powered by a 1l eco engine from ford.

end of story, requires no comments or further thought or worry, its not going to happen, I guarantee it.

Ah yes, my friends in Hungary showed me an aerial concealed in the roof of an old barn with which, back in the day, they would listen to radio from countries that they weren't supposed to be listening to.

Shhhh...we talkin' serial killers. And the meta ban on meta spare parts.

I wish people forgot the gun law tantrums that split the communities. There are countries with bans on all, checkpoints every 25mins of highways and still have violence and massacres prevailing.

As long as the legislature looks good and those in power wash their hands off it. 'Wasn't me'.
