frankly, if it wasn't for the fact that i'd be caught and punished, i'd have killed a lot of people too. killing people is such an efficient and convenient way of never having to deal with certain annoying people ever again, it's no wonder that it has been banned!
I really think there are people like that who only don't do it because the morals of society (and to a lesser extent, the laws of a country) provide a buffer to stop them doing this.

I think if anarchy prevailed, even in a civilised country, there would be quite a few people doing quite a bit of killing.

Virtue signalising the virtue signalling is also the opposite of empathy...but I guess being "edgy" and non-empathic is the thing these days.

Do you assume that people not talking empathically online in a certain way, aren't empathetic irl? Would that logic turn Phil's post into something really unethical?

I guess not taking online stuff with a grain of salt is the thing these days
It's all terribly meta, innit...

Good to see that lessons were learned and hate speech is no longer tolerated.

isn't everybody beating down everybody else for not having sufficient empathy or not having the right kind of empathy or not showing their empathy the right way. When empathy becomes politicized and weaponized, hasn't that sort of defeated what empathy is really about?

Aren't the only reasons for not killing down to:

1. Moral reasons (it is wrong); or
2. Negative consequences of that action.

Arguably #1 stems from #2.

How dare you showing so little empathy by questioning how much empathy and what kind is expected of us by some people? Who don't really care, as long as they can just use it to point out their vast amount the correct empathy? Because, that's what online chitchat is. Correct? Saving lives...making a difference.

Is it too meta? Get it?

Arguably there's a third - someone could not be bothered as they were too lazy.

How about 3 - killing begets killing. If I go about wantonly killing people, someone will do the same to me. Self preservation.

both #2: killing would result in an unnecessary expenditure of energy

How about an assumption that people who publicly don't condemn something wrong are promoting it?

I think you mean "condoning" and I don't think anyone is doing that here. It's just a different opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, right?

Yes and No. I mean if you kill someone with no friends or family, that would not be the case. Also, if you kill someone but nobody knows you did it, nobody would be upset at you.

It is a more global concept that if killing is acceptable and you are willing to do it, so are plenty of others, and eventually you'll get yours. We've evolved to realise that no society can work in this way and if we want a more comfortable way of life where we aren't scared and on high alert 24/7, then killing randomly isn't acceptable.

Isn't that why religion was invented? "I might not be able to see you *insert socially unacceptable action here* but this handy omnipresent, all-seeing deity has deffo got his beady eye on you, fella. Now behave yourself..."

You mean the Swiss in WWII ?

But seriously, I think you are right:

Edmund Burke (1729-1797) - English statesman:

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

I totally agree!

And the WW2 is correct.

With the exception of grandstanding online and calling those who question the authenticity (or choose to focus on other aspects of the problem) unable to empathize.
