The only consolation in this shooting is that the b*st*rd killed himself afterwards.
Why couldn't he have just shot himself first and left the others to their own fate?

You'll be as safe (or unsafe) there as anywhere else in NY/US/the World (well, with some obvious exceptions).
It's all just a lottery.

Yeah right. | | | | | In fact handguns are totally banned in New York city. So banning guns works?
Yeah right.

Yeah right. | | | | | Sorry should have said...."Of all the states that do issue carry pistol licenses, New York State has arguably the strictest handgun licensing policies in the nation". Not quite a total ban but pretty strict.

Yeah right. | | | | | and yes stricter gun control laws certainly do work. new york city has far less fire-arm related deaths than other cities in the u.s much smaller and with less strict gun control laws.
there is less of a gun culture in nyc than in other u.s cities though it is pretty obvious that gun violence is increasing through out the country.
this mornings shootings make me really sad. i went to school not very far from the esb and have my best friend working not less than a block away.

and another shooting in Chicago http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/l...,0,49779.story
It is time to regulate who can have a gun in my opinion. all this screaming about gun control....: you fullfill the qualifications you can still have your gun.....whats so hard about that

wah. this is so sad especially after seeing gun crimes change so drastically from when i was younger- i was getting optimistic.
as for gun control- ot, but numbers do show that stricter laws = less gun violence. of course you can still get guns, but the ease of what you can get and where changes so much.
i grew up with hunters in my family and i grew up knowing not to go on certain blocks because of the threat of the use of human shields so i've had to see and hear both sides.
in my opinion, there is no need for a gun at all- if you want to kill an animal, be a big wo/man and use your hands, if you can't you don't have a right.
but that's waaaay off topic, sorry

They don't need guns...period! Qualifying for a gun means nothing in the US. Any psycho can falsify information, but unfortunately it is too late now. The US must pay its dues...

And since my state is a great hunting state taking guns will only cause bigger problems with regulating the wildlife, deer and so on.. Remember you can take guns from the people but the criminals will always have guns.

Back to your point :
true but I am talking EU regulations that I know of (Belgium)
you have to register, go 12x a year to the shooting range , be a member of a shooting club, pass the exam and mental test register your ammunition, and you can not fire in public (even in your back yard) guns are solely for recreation and in the rare case for protection.
hunting licenses are again another thing where you have to go through several courses etc to 1. know what you are shooting, when and where to shoot it etc, There is a reason why they had to make shooting out of your car for game illegal now isn't there... And I do not think that shooting your gun around friends at a party qualifies as allowable but that my opinion
I' m all for guns and for people to have them but from my time in MN (rather hillbilly like conditions) I think it would be great to have some more control.
Less guns there are less the criminals can get their hands on and the more they are caught the more can be destroyed.
just my 2 cents

When I lived in NY and worked in the Federal court system (decades ago), I was fingerprinted and had to undergo a VERY thorough background check by the FBI that took some months to be completed. I eventually received governmental security clearance at the Federal level, and I was allowed to apply for a firearm license, but there was further scrutiny. I passed muster and obtained a license to carry a small firearm, which I did for several years. The only occasion(s) on which I ever fired that gun was at bi-yearly target practice at the police range -- thankfully! I was also happy to give it up in the end because, somehow, having it became a burden.
