Travel and Health Insurance for my mom (US)

I have looked at the threads on insurance but don't see any with my situation. My mom often comes to visit us from the USA and so far she has not had any health problems (knock wood).

We are planning on taking her on a bigger trip for Christmas, so I had her check her insurance there. Turns out she is not covered abroad, even for emergencies.

Any recommendations for travel/health insurance for a U.S. resident that wants to travel abroad? Would need to be valid for at least a month. She won't be doing any skydiving or anything, so this is mostly to cover accidents or sudden illness.

Thanks for any advice!

Re: Travel and Health Insurance for my mom (US)

As she is a US citizen and is travelling from the USA I would think she would need to buy a US travel insurance. Is there consumer advice available in US?

Sometimes the airlines have insurance for sale, this might work out cheaper as she would only buy the exact number of days travelled.

Would her own health insurance company sell her travel insurance? As she is not at home being cared for by US doctors, but travelling and using cheaper European services, this might be a good option.

Re: Travel and Health Insurance for my mom (US)

You can also get a "visitor" insurance tagged onto your own (Swiss) health insurance here which (in my mum's case) was quite cheap.

Just a word to the wise, though. Declare EVERYTHING when getting travel insurance. My mum takes blood pressure tablets and statins and had a simple surgical procedure 8 months before she visited us. This all impacted on her insurance and if she hadn't declared it, she wouldn't have been properly covered.

These insurance companies seem to be expert in wriggling out of making payouts so beware.

Thanks, Sbrinz. Yes, there is consumer advice in the U.S. but I am in CH and she will actually be flying here to join us and then go on to yet another destination. I'm doing what research I can and probably paying the bill too.

I have seen some airline insurances, but I am not sure if they cover accidents/health emergencies when you're not on the plane, or if you don't stay on the same airline for the whole trip. I have found gobs of information but clearly there's more research to be done.

I will have her check if her own insurance will sell her travel insurance. Can't believe I didn't think of that in all my searching!

I know I have to do my homework so I am not asking others to search for me. Only wondering if others have had a similar experience and what they did.

Thanks again!

jrspet - Thanks for the links. Will check them out.

sandgrounder - Interesting idea. Never heard of visitor insurance. Will look into it.
