it was reposted in the context of demonstrating what was said, not as a delivered joke, if you look at the full context of what I read I am describing it as extremely offensive.
Propagating it on what is not an age-restricted site is careless at best and stupid at worst

Exactly, there is nothing funny about what this person said, in fact I wouldn't call it a joke.

What is wrong with people like this? Do they have no empathy or compassion?
I don't think anyone is denying that the joke is in horrible taste and rudely insensitive, but when did being in horrible taste and insensitive rise to the level of a crime?

Have you actually read the 'jokes' in english forum's jokes section ? If you don't see them as just as offensive then you are at least careless possibly even stupid.

I don't know that what somebody else posts makes your irresponsibility better, but I doubt that they are spreading such offensive material about a little girl who is missing as you wrote. You did.

Anyway, your moral standards are your own business, not mine. But I have reported the post and I hope it gets removed

Re: Man arrested for telling offensive joke on facebook

Bad taste jokes go around after every horrible event, and are all over the internet, I won't offer it here, but I'd be pretty sure to find some horrible jokes abouts anything with a quick google search. You hear them out IRL too, the jokes repeated here are sadly, stock and recycled. Seems this guy mistake was using FB, and so, easily traced, would he have been arrested if he made the same joke in a pub, would you arrest a kid in the playground for repeating the same jokes(I remember jokes like that going round schools before everyone had the internet).

If this guy was mailing messages to the family, yeah, it's a problem. Otherwise, seems like an overeaction.

it has been removed. my moral standards are high, if you were unable to understand the context of the initial posting you would probably agree, but unfortunately your not.

It is making fun of the kidnapping and murder of a five year old girl and for the parents and people searching for her still, would be extremely hurtful.

Can I ask what you find funny about the joke ?
There is no question about it, its a 'bad tasting' joke but it is a joke and its not the first and certainly not the worst joke I have heard.
The bottom line is it is a joke and people laugh/cringe/smile at jokes.
I just don't get why people get offended about jokes even if they are in bad taste.

Are you serious? Do you think it could be the connotation that a paedophile had sexual intercourse with a five year old girl (before possibly murdering her) is offensive?
Yes I am serious but not easily offended by a joke, albeit in bad taste.

There are worse jokes around and there are worse jokes told by high profile comedians who sell millions of dvd's and tickets for concerts, see Frankie Boyle as an example.

I am. But writing what he said - verbatim - then saying you disagree is still spreading around the material, no matter what caveat you applied. I suspect that you think that this justifies it.

Anyway, if you removed it, thank you.

I know I've heard a Ricky Gervais joke that was pedophilia related and very, very "offensive", why doesn't he get arrested?

How can people from first world countries in this day and age support imprisoning people who make offensive jokes? And who determines what's offensive?

I think you should remove your comment as it offends me, I only have one arm and it happens to be my left that is missing, I would do anything for a left arm and you are making jokes about it.

And as I predicted initially, the 'all jokes offend somebody' defence would be used.

Amidst all these logic and reasoning for why its ok to laugh at someone having their daughter kidnapped and murdered, to get back to the question - do you think its funny then, a joke about raping a 5 year old girl ? Or perhaps like above, you'll respond saying "well, no, of course, its not funny to me, but others find it funny".

People can dress it up with whatever logic they want, but it is inherently a nasty statement which makes light of a terrible situation.

The activity being described in the joke is offensive - as is the idea that anyone can find that activity amusing.

As I said in my earlier post, though, I think it's an overreaction for him to be arrested and charged with a crime.

Re: Man arrested for telling offensive joke on facebook

No one is questioning whether or not the joke is tasteless and/or extremely offensive and uncalled for. The issue at hand is whether this type of action should be met with such severe legal consequences. I mean, is this guy really guilty of a crime? And if you think yes, then I think you have a dangerously utopian view of our society.

Also, while I don't think it's necessary to repeat the joke, due to obvious sensitivities, I actually find it useful to provide context.

It's a sick world, people, and this hardly scratches the surface of it. I'd personally rather see the attention of our policing forces directed to more serious issues.
