Replacing wishbone and bushes

Having recently driven into a huge trench, (which workmen had kindly left unfilled, right across the road), the front right wishbone on my BMW 330 completely snapped.

I have been given an extortionate quote from the local BMW garage to replace it, and the bushes ... can anyone advise if this is a big job please? I have googled purchasing the parts in the UK and they are not that expensive (under Euros 100).

Re: Replacing wishbone and bushes

have you discussed liability? I'd frankly be blaming them.

Oh and it's not a job I'd undertake but on an LR3, I had part of the suspension replaced for 400 francs. I think I would not do this without a trolley lift or better.

A couple hours labor, plus parts.

Yes, I have written to the Council, asking for full compensation (I have photos and independent witnesses).

Yes, that is what I thought (so it should not amount to Euros 600).

Re: Replacing wishbone and bushes

Another quick question ... how many bushes are there for each wishbone (ie, left and right)? I have googled exactly that question but can't get an answer.

The reason I am asking is that I want to have the parts shipped over from the UK (even with postage, it will be less than half price).

Try http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/

Enter the data for your car, and you will find some nice diagrams and parts lists.

Re: Replacing wishbone and bushes

Thanks Tom!

The attached pic shows what I think I need to order (at about a third of the price that I would pay here).

If anyone can advise me that I am doing the right thing, I would be incredibly grateful

There are many sets on EBAY UK, it's an easy job to fit.

I just got the rubber bushes from this seller, will fit them tomorrow if it's not cold!

Thanks FMF!

The set in the pic above is (I think) suitable for my model and year of car, from ebay UK, so I think I will go ahead and order.

Re: Replacing wishbone and bushes

If it is their liability, why not let a garage source and fit?

Your having a laugh, the OP is in Malta, holes in the road are expected!

From Ebay Germany, Italy was more expensive!

FMF is right! At the moment I am in Malta and holes in the road are par for the course here. However, that said, I am hoping that the local authority will accept responsibility, given that this was an especially enormous hole.

However, in the event that they do not accept liability I am looking at cheaper alternatives.

Re: Replacing wishbone and bushes

Hi. I have a 530i and I'm not sure if it's the same deal, but I was advised that the bushes were worn, but that they had to be replaced with the wishbones, as they are one unit. Long story short, it cost me 1300 including full service and replacement of all discs and pads. This was in the UK at Kwikfit. So just the wishbones shouldn't be that expensive. Good luck.

OK Kwikfit do tend to fix perfectly serviceable parts. It's how they make their money. Main dealers are often worse!
Whilst changing the bushes will tighten up the handling, a fair amount of play is quite acceptable for both the UK MOT / Swiss MFK .
