How clean is your hotel room?

Very shocking study have been made in Canada on how clean hotels rooms are (or not) with the help of hidden cameras and biologists.

Housekeepers cleaning toilets and the sink using the same brush, same cloth for toilet seat to top of counters, etc.

Scarey!
We will be staying in a hotel in our old home town in the UK over Christmas. Hopefully our room will be perfect, as my husband's niece works there as a chamber maid!

Re: How clean is your hotel room?

This reminds me of a report published a few years ago, where the tested hotels in Switzerland (even expensive luxurious hotels). One prominent hotel (I can't recollect the name now) failed miserably. Since it can be quite a gamble picking a decent hotel, I usually reassure myself by reading tripadvisor comments.

Re: How clean is your hotel room?

I'm amused that this is even news anywhere.

The house keeping staff for hotels is purposefully overworked / understaffed. It's a low paying somewhat demeaning job in the first place, but the fact is, just like many other jobs these days, the corporations skimp on shifts or employees to bolster their profits, and it's the customers who pay (often without necessarily realizing it).

16 rooms completed by "check in", which (as stated in the article) generally is 30min per room. I'm curious how spotless most of us would be able to make a hotel room within 30min. I know I wouldn't be happy with the job I could do within that time - but then again, my imagination about this is full of memories of post-Spring Break rooms in Daytona.

Re: How clean is your hotel room?

Saw a similar report about a year ago. Much depends on the Housekeeper and how thorough she /he is on training staff & spot checking staff at work.
The main problem shown in this video was the same cloth used to clean the toilet used on other surfaces. A cross reference check for you in a hotel is to notice how many different coloured cleaning clothes on a chambermaid's trolley - used /unused.
My main concern are the glass cups in the bathroom, how thorough they are cleaned, I would tend to wash them myself before using

Re: How clean is your hotel room?

a) The housekeeping staff typically make minimum wage.
b) They are judged on how things 'look'.
c) In any case, they don't know you, will hardly ever even see you, will not earn any gratitude for a more thorough cleaning job, and will certainly not be blamed for using your toothbrush to clean your toilet.
d) they will probably lose their job as soon as occupancy rate falls in a month's time anyway.

Why do you think they should care?

oh, I shouldn't read this… I already have a severe Hotel phobia… and it gets worse, when I am watching Monk in the hotel room… Coincidence, I guess, but it is always on TV when I stay in a hotel. Grrrr.

Thanks god, I haven't been in a hotel for a while. Love my tent...

Re: How clean is your hotel room?

Years ago, when I was a chambermaid in Münich, as a student, there were a few maids I worked with who never cleaned properly.. we were given instructions in how to clean with different cloths/sponges for the bathroom bedroom etc. but as Dino has mentioned the rooms are checked after it is completed to see if it looks okay, not while it is being cleaned. As a result, management and guests are non the wiser as to what methods have been used by the maids.

Now a days, when travelling with our small kids, I always bring disinfectant wipes and a small spray when in hotels and re-do the bathroom again before using it

I have stayed in around 20 different hotels around Switzerland ranging from four star to hostels. I haven't considered any of them not to be clean, warm and tidy

Because they looked clean, warm and tidy. Doesn't mean they were.

Re: How clean is your hotel room?

Thank goodness my immune system is functional and strong. I don't care so much about the bathroom faucets but, OMG, the bed linens freak me out all the time and I usually always remove the comforter/duvet, especially if it has any signs of dirt and/or strange smells.

Isn't Gordon Ramsey doing a new show on hotels now? I remember seeing some promo a while back where he's sleeping in a sleeping bag on the bed which cracked me up.

I did find a used tissue under my pillow once and it wasn't mine.
