Elite could be back! (think BBC and C64)

If there are any old gamers out there who have fond memories of playing the space sim Elite on the C64 or BBC, good news, it could be back !
The original developer has brought it up as a kickstart project, so fingers crossed, you could be in your MkIII Cobra deciding if you want to be a bounter hunter, trader or pirate

(I have a feeling this may not get many replies )

Great game, used to play it during schoool computer science. It was never (officially) ported to my Plus/4, but we had mercenary, a wire framed game of a similar genre.

Oh man, Elite. Did you know the screen was in two Modes at the same time ? The wire frame graphics was in Something like mode 2, while the lower third with the map etc was in mode 0.

I wrote my first games on a BBC B, I think I might actually help fund this.

...with 8000 locations! I guess it's a typo but you mean a whopping 32k not a paltry 22 I would wager!

Re: Elite could be back! (think BBC and C64)

The original “Elite” fitted into around 22K of memory, out of a total of 32K on the BBC Micro Model B computer on which it was launched (8K was needed for the screen, 2K for the system). This is less than a single typical email today. In it were eight galaxies each with 256 star systems. Each planet in those systems had its own legal system, economy and so on. Clearly some magic had to happen to fit it into 22K, and that magic was procedural generation.

Quoted from the kickstarter post

Really amazing how so much could be packaged in something so small, true innovation.

Really hope this kickstarter works, and he can bring out a game thats true to the original

Re: Elite could be back! (think BBC and C64)

I'd be interested in a complete emulated version of the original bbc floppy disk based version. However if they're going to start from scratch then they need to take a look at the X3 games and produce something without the multitude of bugs and glitches that the X3 series of games has.

A proper game story plot would be nice as well.
