Weird.

Are you posting to get thanks? If not then does it matter it is in off topic?

Only pulling suicidal kids off train tracks impresses me now. This is nothing.
Awww. I disagree. Parents cheering for kids always impress me.

Is once a week swimming enough for a 5yr old?

I used to go twice a week but once is probably enough for form and a bit of fitness, though not of course if the child wants to compete.

Incorrect, the entire forum is Googleable. Off Topic used to be safe from the spiders but that was changed a while back.

Very good point. I assume from this text and what I have found on EF, the Off Topic threads are not googleable. Good idea.

Sutter, congratulations for your daughter.

I am interested in knoowing more about the swiming club scene in Switzerland. How are copetitions organised? Are there competitins between schools, or do children all have to join clubs for competition? How young are the youngest competitiors? HOW regularly are the competitions? Local? Regional?

Many thanks.

This thread was moved here by the mods so that Sutter could, and I quote "so that she is able to share her good news (even if it's in general off-topic)."

I know this as my allegedly off-topic and tongue-in-cheek post about voting buttons was deleted from this thread last night.

So moderators, how about also deleting all these other off topic posts about the merits and solutions of dealing with potentially frivolous threads from Sutter and/or others?

Frankly moderation needs to be like good parenting: consistent and rational. Or the kids turn into ungrateful little psychos.

Most if not all Swim clubs accept young children based on who is next on the waiting list. Yes, you have to show you can swim but before, say, ten, there is no such thing as try-outs or getting in because you are awesome. Two of my close friends were on the national swim team, so they should know... You join your local club and usually train twice a week for little ones and up to five times for older ones. If you are really good you join a larger club in your region like the Limmat Sharks in Zurich. Competition is between clubs.

I dont think so, but I respect your opinion, sure beans. Maybe if there was a mommy mod and daddy mod, maybe. But we aint parents, nor teachers. Most of the times we rely on adult members trusting us, since there is absolutely zero mod's interest in what we do, and we rely on adult members self modding. I think, to have a bunch of us, working at different times and with a slightly different angle is good. Allow people to adjust, we are only humans..picking at understaffed, continuously criticized and unpaid folks won't benefit nobody. I laugh and do what I can, we all do, me thinks. And while we are at mods faults, lemmi apologize for my typos, my HTC screen has officially retired, its batt linked. Its super annoying.

Let's not water down OP's swimming thing, though. It's interesting, also, how different sea and open waters are for a little kid and pool swim training. I have a water obsessed little beast at home, need to use her enthusiasm now.

I guess this section has no Thanks or Groan, but I would have Thanked it if I could.

Nevertheless, mods aren't the only people who give a lot of time to the forum and help breath life into it. Just sayin.

Look for an ozone or salt water pool, or go for the lake and its free duck poo organic soup?

The best place to get an overview are the links in the Swimming in Switzerland thread. Pick a club from the list and have a look at their home page. Even if you cannot understand the language, most of them will have a list of their groups etc. which will give you an idea of the set up. I believe some International Schools have Swimming teams. AFAIK Swiss schools don't.

There are swimming clubs which are more in the 'fun' line and competitive swimming clubs. Children have to have a licence to compete in official meets. Many clubs also have a swim school as the better a child is taught at a basic level the more it can profit from the coaching at a higher level. (This has nothing to do with being fast over a very short distance; important is the elusive 'Wassergefühl' (feeling for the water), which leaves those of us who have it to a lesser degree green, green, green with envy. Depending on the child's age, the size and niveau of the club and the length of the waiting list, children may be 'ruthlessly selected' or may be simply checked for their ability not to be in danger of drowning.

Ruthless selection is not always an easy task. I once almost turned down an 11 year old whose swimming wasn't up to the standard expected for her age. However she was so, so keen, I gave her a ‘strictly limited to three months’ trial period. I've never regretted it and nor has she. She's now, to our mutual amusement and satisfaction, one of the best triathletes in Switzerland. Ironman Hawaii and all that.

Youngest competitors are perhaps about seven years old. Kidsliga are competitions set-up for younger swimmers with special rules where tumble turns and five meters underwater after the dive are compulsory. The idea is to encourage the chldren to practice specific skills. See when a local pool has one and go along to watch. It's fun. Take ear plugs though - the noise can be rather loud!
Text edited: Kidsliga has changed its events!

At most competitions the children attend as a team but swim 'individually', entering for the disciplines they (or their coaches) choose. Some competitions are club against club. The coaches decide which competitions the club takes part in. In region Zürich, there are usually competitions in Bülach, Winterthur, Baar, Wädenswil, Meilen, Thalwil, Kloten, Oerlikon, Uster, Dietikon and others - places where there are clubs to organise them.
Races can be over distances between 50m-200m in any of the four swimming strokes, plus the interesting Medly races and Relays. The organiser can select which disciplines he has on the programme. National Competition Events are fixed. Check out results of swimmers here. A list of meets can be found in www.fsn.ch the Swiss Swimming home page.

Hope this helps.

If I get around to it, I’ll link this post into the Swimming in Switzerland thread, so that anyone, surprise, surprise, looking in the right place for the information, might just see it.

Once a week will be 'enough' for most 5 year olds as other skills are also important. Another sport helps too.

Times have changed a bit in the past few years and these days the Kids Liga competition events include, for the 10 and 11 year olds, 50m Fly (Delphin) and 100m Kraul with tumble turn. So even a ten year old might be turned down by a quality club. Most clubs are short of water-time and coaches and a ‘late-starter’ is a load of work for the coach. Being unable to turn properly, the newcomer often also interferes with the training of the others in the lane. This can mean that the coach gets phone calls from aggrieved parents who complain that their children are being short-changed!

Congrats to your daughter for being accepted to the local swim club. Truly a reason to be proud and a good sport to keep in shape. But I don't see that as being accepted to the Swiss National Team. She will compete for the local team, yes. Good luck to her!PS: Agree, something like this does belong on Facebook.

I, too, like to see (and hear) parents supporting their children and that Sutter was jumping the gun with the 'Swiss Swimming Team' is, for me, not the end of the world. However, if her daughter gets this impression and says something along these lines at school she may have a very rude awakening.

Most parents know what 'good' piano playing sounds like, so when the child starts the first scales, the parents know that that is not quite concert standard. I guess that most people in Switzerland have rarely, if ever, seen a really good swimmer in action. So they have nothing to compare their children's swimming with. Beating other local children over a short distance is great fun and very satisfying. Going to the Regional, Junior National or National Championships is another league.

Maybe if Sutter's daughter really takes to it, I'll see her around.
Good luck.
