13 CHF donation - for three lovely girls in Gambia

Today, from nowhere, my better half told me “magnus, we are very fortunate”. I couldn’t agree more. Later I got a facebook message from my “sister” – she has helped me and supported me when I was a young lost teenager

Anyway, she now lives in Gambia and she asked for some help – in short, there are three young girls (Fatou 12, Isatou 8, Awa 5) who lost their school sponsorship and in order to allow them to continue they need 700 euros per girl/per school year. I want to raise as much as we can.

To donate via paypal please go here:
http://magnusbogucki.com/photography/donate/

There is also a picture of the girls and contact detail about the school and contact person if you have any questions.

Re: 13 CHF donation - for three lovely girls in Gambia

Is Gambia in North Africa somewhere?

700 Euros per child per school year? Converted to South African Rands that`s around R5,000? Are they in a private college? Sorry, but I`ve not heard those prices for schools in North African states.

ZAR is still a good currency by African standards, other African states have a much less valuable currency, so 700 Euros is a bit off scale here.

Plus, can you tell us how they managed to "lose" their "scholarships"?

It isn't a scam - its a genuine project.

Donate or don't donate - your choice - but the guy has shared the information and his personal details and I can vouch (for what it is worth) of the authenticity of both him and the programme he is discussing here

I think it's incredible that you don't do any due diligence and just ask people on the forum to donate to people in Gambia around the xmas period when people are willing to give!

The school's website clearly says that it's a nursery school for pupils aged three to seven and according to you 2 of the girls are above the age of 7! So they can't even study in the school! A small hole in your story!

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Re: 13 CHF donation - for three lovely girls in Gambia

Hi Guys,

First I got a bit upset reading the comments but then I thought it through and realisd it is indeed very hard to ask for donation without it sounding dodgy/like a scam.

What I tried to do to avoid to get that feeeling is:

- I put my business name behind it (and I work on reputation in Switzerland as a photographer)

- I gave an email to my "sister" (not actual sister but helped me a lot when I was yonger) who works in Gambia. She lives there with her son and therefore they are close to this school.

- There is a link to the school in question

- Photo of the girls. We will also post a video later on saying thanks for the help.

Now to give you a bit more background about the situation...

For the past two years, two have been sponsored by a British lady and the other part funded by the Head Teacher's brother. Unfortunately for personal reasons the British lady had removed her sponsorship. They are, all three able to stay until the end of December, but from then on the school cannot afford to keep them. They are, all three able to stay with us until the end of December, but from then on the school cannot afford to keep them.

There is a UK based charity ‘Little Stars of The Gambia’ that also works with this: enquiry@lsotg.org.uk / +44(0) 7776188152

I decided to raise money myself and pass it on to the girls. If we reach 700 then the three girls can stay one more term at least. This will allow Hanna to find long term sponsors.

Here is a link to the school: http://www.llec-gambia.info/

Re: 13 CHF donation - for three lovely girls in Gambia

I think it is admirable that you are concerned and seeking to help these girls.

Unfortunately, asking for help on a mostly anonymous internet forum is probably not the best way to get donations, as there will always be skepticism as to whether or not the plea and backstory are legitimate.

If I were you, I would target my real-life friends and family in order to raise the rest of the money. Personally, I would much sooner donate to a cause championed by a friend as my (favorable) judgment of the legitimacy of the campaign would be influenced by the trust I have in my friend. That is not possible on an internet forum.

Exactly! Trust is not transitive! I might trust the OP but why should I trust the "sister" of the OP who he may well trust himself??

In fact I don't even trust the OP! No offence but why would anyone trust anyone on the internet that they have never met??

Re: 13 CHF donation - for three lovely girls in Gambia

I totally agree with asking your friends ad family, and this is how I have raised the money so far. Also by sharing this with my followers on Facebook (wanted to give a link but then afraid people will say I am doing this for advertisment)

I guess I was a little naive by the post - for some reason englishforum seems small to me and thought people would "know" who I am and therefore it would have the same impact.

60% of the population has an income of below one US dollar a day so asking for help within the country is very hard therefore organisations must turn to the outside for sponsorship. Sadly they are scams and therefore people become hesitant. I just know Hanna very well and her mother (who used to be my school teacher at united world college in norway). I asked her for a photo for the blog and she popped over to the school and grabbed a few photos. I was asking her for a video and I will get it in the next week...because I want to make this real.

But like you guys said, I am anonymous (kind of - this is me - http://magnusbogucki.com/inf/about_me_fotograf/) and there is nothing I can write that will give you 100% evidence it is NOT a scam. So follow your gut feeling.

Re: 13 CHF donation - for three lovely girls in Gambia

FFS guys - stop it already. The guy HAS asked his friends through more traditional methods (that's how I know about it) and he is just attempting to do some good.

If you don't trust him, fine, don't donate. But enough already with this - he's given full disclosure of the charity contact details, he isn't anonymous and he is just trying to do some good. I think you can afford to treat him with a little courtesy even if you decide not to give

Don't see why people can't discuss this; same as the car adverts. The OP doesn't seem offended and has replied well, hopefully allaying people's concerns. Which I also had initially but didn't bother to vocalise/type. You could have simply said "I know the OP" or have mutual friends or whatever, which would also have helped. FFS indeed.
