I hate my metabolism

There I was, New Year's resolutions an' all, trying to watch what I eat, drink less, get fit and lose 20 or ks by July.
Or, that was the plan.
So for the last week and a half, I've done just that; watched what I ate, drank (marginally) less, regular visits to the gym and my weight budges...not a jot.
I have one evening with the guys, a few beers and a burger and chips (Crazy Wolf in Fribourg btw, highly recommended) and my weight shoots up a kilo in 24 hrs.
I'll just have to resort to liposuction, or amputation.

I hate my metabolism

Re: I hate my metabolism

It happens to all of us after big feast. Usually one SOLID visit to toilet will result in one kilo less. Balance will be restored.

Aww, chin up Paddy! It's not about that lying scale. It's about how you feel and how your clothes fit. And it generally takes more than 10 days for your body to get used to a new routine. So...

Walk from FR to BE to join us at the tramdepot and you can have as many beers as you want. Can't promise you'll be fit to walk back but hey...

Re: I hate my metabolism

Hang in there....This is a very common thing when people first decide to go on a diet and exercise plan. You will hear this from the Weight Watchers group. Most people drop out in the first few weeks because they actually gain a few pounds. Their explanation is that the body perceives this drastic change in calorie intake and exercising and goes into a 'starvation' mode. So it begins to store more of the food you eat even if you eat less. It takes about 4 weeks for your body to recognize this is not the case and creates a new 'set point'. Then you will start seeing the pounds go away.

Good luck!

This is one of the things I hate about being over 30: no unlimited eating and drinking with no consequences anymore

Re: I hate my metabolism

Maybe a bit longer than a week or so and results will start to show. Don't forget either that as you burn off the fat and become fitter you do often put weight back on after a few weeks, but it's muscle not fat. Keep at it, hopefully you'll soon see the results on the scales and as 3Wishes says it's really about how you feel and how the clothes fit.

Yeah, I kind of guessed this might be the case. Still bloody infuriating though. Anyway, as of tomorrow, I plan 3 -4 weekly High Intensity bike workouts at the gym, with the odd cardio routine thrown in. See what happens.

Re: I hate my metabolism

Don't stress chunky. Lard-arses often find their weight goes (even) higher at the start of a gym program. This is because some of the vast amounts of excess fat are dropped and some muscle is formed (denser).

Keep wobbling down to the gym and keep you mouth closed near cake and you'll be fine.

Keep it up fatties

Re: I hate my metabolism

I refuse to go anywhere neas a scale.

I evaluate my fitness through my clothes. When they get too tight, it's time to stop snacking. my 'volume' is more important than my weight.

Weight can vary immensly over the day (+/- 1 kg), and even over the week, depending on what you ate (salty food = water retention, etc.). checking your weight once a month is enough.

Re: I hate my metabolism

what kind of stuff do you eat? because I have been using the glycemic diet and walking only 4,000 steps a day instead of the recommended 6,000 and am losing weight like crazy.

also take a vitamin B complex pill everyday and it works very well.

If you're trying to lose and are using a scale (I go more by what hole I use on my belt), you can't freak about a kilo or two or even three day to day. My weight can fluctuate easily 2 kilos one day to the next, sometimes 3. 'Course it's proportional to your size- if you weigh 50kg then a 2kg fluctuation is huge. 100kg and it's normal.

Used to work with a guy who was a serious food junkie, belly to go with that, and also socially awkward. At the coffee break one morning he announced that he had been on the can 3 times the evening before and lost 7kg . Wasn't sure if it was weirder for him to say that or to have weighed himself before and after.

You could save money by just announcing your weight on here each week and we could give you positive or negative rep depending on whether you had lost or gained weight.

Re: I hate my metabolism

I often see some lag on both sides. Start exercising and eating less but the weight starts to come off after some days or weeks. Start eating more and exercising less.... vice versa.
