Re: Top Gear: 2013

Just an aside - you gotta larf.

Old TG repeat on BBC 3 - I'm not really watching, just killing time before the footie - but it's the one where they drive three 70's British sports cars to half demolished former car factories, lamenting the demise of the British car industry (Jeff Goldblum is 'star in a .. ...')

Despite all the recent trouble in Argentina regarding registration plates, it started long before, with JC taking the piss out of himself.
As they convoyed up the motorway, JC was doing a piece to camera, making anagrams from the four letters on the plates of the other two.

He concluded by saying that several anagrams could be made from all their plates.
Then, a shot from the camera car, panning back to reveal his number plate ......

Despite this, I think the decision is wrong. It is sending out a message that he has almost completely got away with the assault. It appears that the live show is organised partly by BBC Worldwide and a private company. Although BBC worldwide is a separate company and the BBC name is not being used, most people will see the association.

Perhaps Clarkson should donate his fee to a charity of the choice of the producer who was assaulted.

If I was a BBC Director, I would be looking at the possibility of suing Clarkson for the lost income

How exactly has he got away? He was effectively fired from Top Gear. You suggest that the shows be cancelled completely? Let's look at your preferred outcome:

1. The BBC loses because they will be sued for damages and lose a whole load more goodwill with Top Gear fans.
2. Clarkson loses because the BBC would likely try to recoup those damages perhaps (even though the success is very far from certain).
3. May and Hammond lose even though they had nothing to do with the whole incident.
4. Most importantly, the fans lose. Particularly those who have taken a day off or have made travel arrangements to see the show.

Let's be honest, punching the producer was a mistake and his sacking is hard to argue against, even though it is the end of Top Gear. His career as it stands with BBC is over. You are blowing the whole thing way out of proportion.

If they had appeared next year in a different format, totally unconnected to BBC or Top Gear, I wouldn't have a problem with it. This is basically the Top Gear show with the name removed.

3 and 4 are fair points. My suggestion that he donate his fee to charity seems to be a fair compromise

Had the producer pressed charges, he probably wouldn't have had the option of the live shows and could have faced a maximum of six months in prison, though a fine or community order would have been most likely if he was convicted

Re: Top Gear: 2013

So ..... just seen a trailer/preview, on BBC2, showing clips of of previously unseen material, including and involving all three regular, usual suspects (JC included), concluding with the tag line: "Top Gear - coming to BBC2, soon"

Have the beeb capitulated, and have now decided to show the last few, filmed episodes?

Re: Top Gear: 2013

I am completely gutted at this news - not against his appointment, as such, but by the fact that he has been continually completely denying that he would do the show (on his radio show), ever since rumours started to appear - in fact just a few days ago he was still 'singing this song'.

That's a big cred loss, in my books.

Why? I'd expect there would have been some sort of embargo. Nobody moaned when Capaldi was announced as Doctor Who after a load of secrecy (well, other than those that wanted someone else).

What's he supposed to do?
