I am completely gutted at this news - not against his appointment, as such, but by the fact that he has been continually completely denying that he would do the show (on his radio show), ever since rumours started to appear - in fact just a few days ago he was still 'singing this song'.

That's a big cred loss, in my books.
He may have been told to keep quiet by the BBC until everything was confimed. I think he is a bad choice. He is too big for the show and the potential for repeating the Clarkson problems must be pretty high.

Apart from that he is very irritating

"Evans said he had wanted Top Gear to carry on with Hammond and May and had not wanted to "contaminate the situation" by throwing his hat in the ring.

"Whenever I said 'I categorically rule myself out of running for office', it was because I didn't want to be a pawn in a chess game involving three of my friends."

The situation changed this week, he explained, with Hammond and May confirming they would not continue on the programme in Clarkson's absence."

http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-33162666

And Evans has already had his fall from grace so maybe he's learned a lesson from that. Given that the whole programme is irritating, he should fit right in!

Going by the social media diarrhea I've seen, nobody would have been a good choice - at all.

As for your statement that he's too big for the show, well my answer would be that Clarkson was already way bigger. Also I know a lot of people that found Clarkson very irritating.

Evans is a lad, he always has been, and Top Gear is a lads program. He's entertaining, has knowledge of automotive stuff - personally I can't think of anybody else who could have a half decent crack at fronting Top Gear in the absence of Clarkson.

Give him a chance is what I say.

All in my opinion of course - just like every other bugger out there that's got an opinion on this.

Please please please not Jodie Kidd as co presenter, just try to watch c5's classic car show to see why, it really is embarrassing watching her.

Figures why he proved to be whiter than white while presenting TFI Friday last week. Did not suit him one bit.

The problem is that the new show of Clarkson, May and Hammond will be the new Top Gear.
This will become like the American Top Gear: a nice try but everyone will compare with the original and think that it sucks.

True, but from what I've heard Clarkson, Hammond, May - or whatever, is going to be with Netflix. As I'm not and never will be a subscriber to Netflix, I'll have to take what I can get.

Re: Top Gear: 2013

Some think he may be not the best choice.

http://www.theguardian.com/commentis...undhog-day-bbc

Especially as they've handed him the whole production side as well.

http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-33162666

Don't they ever learn? This is now a recipe for disaster as there'll be no one to rein him in.

Jodie Kidd looks favourite to take the female presenter spot.

Today it's been announced that Clarkson, May and Hammond have signed a multi-million contract to create a new show on Amazon Prime. Meanwhile, Osin is back to fetching the tea. Now who's the winner and who's the loser out of all this...?

Re: Top Gear: 2013

I feel like the viewer is the loser. Do a lot of people use Amazon video? I know I prefer netflix and I don't want to pay for two streaming services.

Also the charm of Top Gear on the BBC is these oiks running around sticking two fingers up to a British institution. It's not as much fun when the shenanigans are allowed or even encouraged.

I'm thinking about watching one old episode per week on Netflix.
Amazon Prime is officially not available in Switzerland and the new BBC top gear will be like top gear us: not worth watching.

I won't pay for one, certainly not two. And it would take a lot more than a revamped version of a program which had already gone well past its prime anyway.

Well the charm was in the idea that they were just having a laugh, back when their on-screen antics made at least a token effort to appear genuine. Recent series had altogether lost that charm, and it's just no fun at all watching them, for example, accidentally crash a caravan into a post, when it's plainly obvious that it was scripted, planned and filmed especially to maximise that moment.

Good riddance to 'em, I say. Leave the stage open for a new program that might actually be more about cars (and bikes, would be nice) than simply using them as a vehicle (pun intended) for slapstick light entertainment. Shame really that when the (old) new TG first came out it soon ecclipsed the much better Fifth Gear, which had retained some of the presenters and the ethos from the original TG.

It's a similar situation in the UK with BT Sport and Sky. And it's times like this when you have to put on the kettle and be thankful that you live in Switzerland where you can stream and torrent these things for free

I think that's all true but it depends on what you want from the program. if people wanted a show about car reviews being done well then Fifth gear would still be around. But Top Gear isn't that (or isn't anymore) and was just an entertainment show.

Re: Top Gear: 2013

Producers don't want a "more car based, 5th Gear-esque" programme - they want a more "cocking about in cars" type programme - and for 1 very simple reason:

1) It sells - a lot.

The old Top Gear (not to be confused with the old-old Top Gear or Original Top Gear) had a massive global audience both for the new programmes and the repeats. With a steady revenue stream they were able to finance tests which a "speciality" car programme simply couldn't do. Check out any of the German language car programmes - they are dull, in fact they make original Top Gear (and their obsession with CD figures) look positively interesting.

If you want further evidence of that - look at who the BBC has selected as their main presenter - the extremely dull Chris Evans. The future's bright - the future's orange
