Re: Top Gear: 2013

If Jeremy Clarkson leaves the BBC, there is no guarantee that Top Gear would go with him. Why would the BBC want to sell it to another broadcaster?

There could be a Jeremy Clarkson motoring programme elsewhere but would it be Top Gear without the name, theme music, James May, Richard Hammond, Stig, Star in a Reasonably Priced Car or the Dunsfold track and hangar?

On the other hand, would Top Gear on the BBC be successful with someone like Guy Martin in place of Jeremy Clarkson, and everything else remaining?

I think that if ever I encountered anyone called 'Oisin', on an empty stomach - even if they didn't have a stupid surname to match - I, also, would probably want to punch them in the face.

Hammond would go with Clarkson wherever he went, he has all the instincts of an eager puppy looking to please his master (i.e Clarkson). James May on the other hand could continue the program, probably taking it back to its roots as a factual car show.

the bbc just buy topgear, and own the name, the production, filming etc etc is all done by 3rd parties, so it would be simplicity itself for the whole thing, without the name, to be bought up by someone else. Given the support may and hammond have shown clarkson I recon they will follow him wherever he went

But both Hamster and May have done solo ventures with the beeb, which must have been professionally satisfying, as well as lucrative (if not contractual).
So it may not be so easy, to cut the chord, for them.

Re: Top Gear: 2013

The soundbites from JC should he be sacked might be quite forthright. I can't imagine him saying anything nice about the Director - his distain for the way the BBC is run is well documented.

He's a regular columnist for The Sun and Sunday Times, Murdoch isn't paying him to write love letters to Auntie

If money was the sole object he'd have left years ago. Don't forget their Beeb salaries were cut, was it last year or the year before.

the bbc just buy topgear
They already own it. They own the programme format too, having bought out Clarkson and Andy Wilman in 2012, so are extremely unlikely to let another TV company produce/broadcast it. You'd need a new, untried format.

Exactly my point. I can't see anything closely resembling Top Gear appearing on another channel. Fifth Gear on Channel 5 was a spin off from the original Top Gear. That has been a great success hasn't it?

Re: Top Gear: 2013

5th gear was total shite, they took the worst, most annoying ex topgear people, and tried to copy topgear, but without any of the childish humor, or budget, or cars, vicki butler-henderson is the most annoying, untalented, useless people ever to have got onto tv

Well, it lasted for quite a few years on C5, then went to Discovery and current series (2015) is now floating around on the History Channel.

Well, TBF, it was spun off by some of the team after the Beeb cancelled the TG. As such it was the only motoring program available, and did much better than the fading TG had. Relatively speaking it was lively and innovative.

Only once Clarkson came back with his new format TG, with all the exciting entertainment-based content, did 5G really suffer, and even then it kept going on Ch5 for another decade or so, and I believe it's still being produced by one of the minor sat channels.

I think it would. And to make it a teeny less laddish, get in that German woman who drives around the Nurburgring. She seems a laugh and can certainly drive. That might put an end to all the witless, tired and now, frankly embarrassing WWII jokes (for want of a better word).
