So, i have recently been made aware that mod's have the power, and do look at how you issue rep.

This is new to me.

I had thought rep, along with pm's were kind of secret. I am surprised that a mod has messaged me today warning me about repping people or facing a ban?

I have to say, it is very rare that I bad rep people spontaneously from a post. Green rep I give plenty, normally to a lot of newbies struggling with the politics. If I don't like a post, I might groan, but tend not to rep negatively too much.

But of course, when I get insults in rep, like how I behave in open threads, if I feel an attack, like someone implying I am domestic abuser, or what not, I give it back, that I would of thought is obvious.

I suspected the person who insulted me had complained when I insulted back, but the mod told me no one complained, and that they decided to check my rep as they had a hunch. If this is true, then they would of seen I only neg repped once yesterday I believe, and it was in retaliation to being called some choice words.

This thread is not intended to play the poor me card. I just didn't know mods read up on rep and warn people about it, in such circumstances.

So........anyone have any thoughts on this?

Tit for tat or retaliatory repping has always been forbidden on the site, and the messages sent via rep are subject to the same restrictions ie cannot be abusive etc

Ummmmm.... It's a privately-owned, public forum. What else did you expect?

Could it be that the person/s you red repped sent a copy to the mods?

I'm certainly happy the Mods do have limiting powers, communication on this Website has to be controlled. I prefer to say things to people in person, or if not, speak highly about those that are not present. Certain people could use this as a tool to project their frustrations, feelings but would refrain in person as they have the screen to hide behind, given a certain false courage.
It brings all us Expats etc together, and a tool to discuss, help and take the piss out of each other.
So mods, mod away!

I guess they would have powers to check but not go checking on a "hunch". Of course, the mod has let slip a few clangers so it is obvious, it would appear, that there was a complaint and no such hunch and this mod is protecting their interest/member/friend.

It could be. However, going back to consistency, the words I used were less abusive then the ones they used. But for me it comes back to, if you are prone to resorting to repping or abusing when a discussion gets heated, why cry when you get it back?

When you go to your own "control panel" you can see the comments against the recent blobbies you've been given.

The mods can see this for every user.

They can't see a list of the rep you've sent, but if they happen on someone who you did send rep to, they'd see the comment you left with it. So they wouldn't know if that was the only red blobby you sent, for example. I think.

if its written, it's saved on a server. If its saved on a server, it can be read by someone with access to that server. Simples. Don't assume anything here is truly 'private.'

I'm saying what the mods can see, not what a DBA with database access can extract and decode. That's what the question was.

The mods have no access to the database nor to the "admin" features within VBulletin itself, only the moderator parts.

That is true, Mods cannot read PMs nor have access to the numerous databases and tables.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss ( for a while I could not see my reps nor of others, once no longer a Mod ).

I *still* can't see reps beyond mine though

No more as I left a month back but know this:

I suppose only persons listed as Administrators in this list can, and expect it to be heavily tracked / monitored by Editor Bob, a hands on Admin.

These usually log in from Germany or Sweden, and largely do not interfere with the day to day moderation of the forum.

Do not mess in the affairs of moderators, for they are quick to anger and not very subtle.
