Motorway Hotels en route to Calais?

Hi fellow EFers.

We're planning on driving to the UK via the Eurotunnel this Spring and want to stay in a Hotel close to the Motorway en route to Calais (we're departing Zurich in the evening so don't want to drive through the whole night). I know in the UK there are Hotels at most Service Stations but haven't been able to find any on the French Motorway.

Does anyone have any tips on where to stay, preferrably close to the Motorway around Reims?

Maybe some of you who are driving regularly between UK and CH know of any good places that aren't overly expensive?

Your help will be much appreciated!

Cheers

A little off the motorway but in the general area: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev..._Lorraine.html

I've stayed there and it's cute. It's also not far from a big supermarket.

Re: Motorway Hotels en route to Calais?

Looks like a nice Hotel but unfortunately not along the fastest route to Calais. Thanks for the tip though
We want to stay along the motorway roughly half way to Calais therefore around Reims or Metz.

Re: Motorway Hotels en route to Calais?

Thionville is near Metz and having done autoroutes all the way and driven through Luxembourg and Belgium, there is little in it.

My chosen route is through Luxembourg and Belgium as I take a different ferry but I've done that route to Calais and it is about 50km longer and has fewer tolls.

Belgians cannot drive, of course. So this can impact your progress

We stay in the Ibis by Rheims.

It isn't fancy and the breakfast is pretty poor but it is cheap; has secure parking and is just off the motorway.

I've stayed here a few times. It's a lot better than most. The restaurant in the evening is actually really quite good with a wood-fired grill.

Once, and never again. Dirty, squalid and basically a brothel for the local prostitutes.

If you want to visit Rheims in the evening you could stay at the very nice Best Western in the town centre.

We do the trip regularly - good family hotel and next to E25
ibis Luxembourg Sud -plus added benefit petrol very cheap in Luxembourg, diesel was 1.22 euro on Wed, plus you save about 25 in French tolls each way with this route

Re: Motorway Hotels en route to Calais?

We used to do a stop overnight but now we do it in one day. We set off really early when there's no traffic and get to Calais around 3.00pm.

I've given up setting off late in the evening as it's incredibly difficult to stay awake and both my wife and I decided it wasn't worth the risk.
(It's not just us, you should see how others drive at 1.00am).

The secret is to book a ferry a couple of hours after you think you'll get there so it's stress free if you hit a patch of bad traffic.
And I've never not been allowed on an earlier ferry if I arrive at the port early.

Re: Motorway Hotels en route to Calais?

We use the tunnel and book for a couple of hours after we expect to arrive in Calais (with cheapo tickets). Always been on time and always allowed on the next departing train.

Same here - but we now stop in Calais as we still have a couple of hours to go t'other side. Kyriad Plage is simple and basic, accepts pets, friendly and with decent restau, just minutes from Ferry.

Yes, we used this one as well on a stopover back from the UK. Don't bother with the Formule 1's, they don't have bath/toilet facilities in each room - at least the ones in the UK don't. You'd have to wander down the corridor in the middle of the night if you need the toilet.

If you go for the Ibis at Tinqueux make sure you take the A4 into Reims Centre and not the new A34 by-pass which goes around the city when the motorways diverge.

But it can be very noisy if you are a poor sleeper. We have travelled back and forth on that route for 20 years and still cannot find a decent overnight stop near the motorway! Good Luck.

Um, not a problem we've ever had at an Ibis. Usually very quiet.

Ear plugs?

I've found the Ibis quiet too.

There are some smashing places to stay about 20-30 minutes drive from the motorway in peaceful French countryside.

Re: Motorway Hotels en route to Calais?

Driving back at Christmas I stayed in a B&B about 20 minutes off the motorway just north of Reims. In the middle of nowhere, very small, very quiet, good food, run by a Belgian family.

http://www.villabelvedere.nl/?page=18

I happened upon it by accident but would definitely recommend it above any motorway chain hotel in the area.
